Mar 23, 2014 11:59 AM in response to Douglas Broylesby Wolfblues,Yes. I was very disappointed that Apple had dropped this extremely useful feature. It's shows a complete disrespect for users. Unfortunately there have been a few instances where Apple have behaved like the bullies they are and unless there is a mighty fuss they will ignore it. I have a feeling restoring substituing invisibles isn't going to generate too many complaints, which isn't to say we who have used it, should be deprived of the facility.
Anyway have to agree with many posters. Bean is an excellent programme. Have used it for many years. Unfortunately the original developer has stopped developing the programme. I wrote to him and said I would pay for it, but got no reply.
I downloaded another programme called QuickWord Pro for about 6 dollars. It turned out to be a version of Bean though not as good. The developer who I couldn't contact had obviously got hold of the code and was selling what turned out to be an broken version. I complained to Apple and they sent me a refund, but I don't think they have removed the programme from the store, so a word of warning. It's rubbish!
On my iPad I use iA Writer. It's really well designed for easy writing with extended keyboard functions. I prefer it over Pages which I also had on my iPad. It's cheaper too.

Mar 23, 2014 5:04 PM in response to Douglas Broylesby floobyduster,For those who have not seen it, go and get a copy of LibreOffice from www.libreoffice.org - it's free! and has extensive search/find and replace capabilities, including Regular Expressions and GREP patterns. All the stuff Apple doesn't care about!
It's also worth adding the free extension 'Alternative dialogue Find & Replace for Writer' which makes some of the common selections quicker and easier.
Enjoy

Jun 6, 2014 12:09 PM in response to Douglas Broylesby joshuavik,★HelpfulIt really is astonishing that Apple is removing functionality like this. Even more incredible, I just found out that Advanced Search is possible in TextEdit, believe it or not! (in the Find dialog, click on the drop-down menu in the magnifying glass icon, and choose "Insert Pattern" -- voilà! Invisibles, wildcards, you name it.) So TextEdit is more powerful than Pages in this regard... gotta laugh to keep from crying.

Jun 6, 2014 12:25 PM in response to joshuavikby Douglas Broyles,A good observation I had not noticed about TextEdit. To think that little pea-brained text editor has the functions that Pages stripped out. Like you say, laugh to keep from crying.
I'm constantly battling the update button to keep my old copy of Pages for iPad so it wouldn't "upgrade" my files to the weaker newer Pages, incompatible format to the older Pages. I wish I could find a way to stop it from trying to "upgrade" me. That little red circle with 1 in it will forever be there on the iPad App Store.
Now if iOS 8 breaks my backward compatiblity to my old Pages, I will be royally P.O.'d. Ya gotta watch your back.

Jun 14, 2014 4:44 PM in response to Douglas Broylesby PeterBreis0807,TextEdit is far from a pea brained text editor, it actually has some really powerful features muddled together with the usual Apple gotchas.

Jun 14, 2014 7:22 PM in response to PeterBreis0807by Douglas Broyles,OK. Perhaps my metaphor was too hyperbolic; just thinking about the new Pages can color my thoughts crabby. I am prone to hyperbole. I'll move up from pea sized to pecan sized but not quite walnut sized. It does have some nice features for daily basic typing. One nice one off the format menu is the ability to insert a table with unusually powerful adjustments. The list is OK, but I usually need to promote and demote in an outline, so need a little more oomph in that spot.
Give me custom headers and footers and a dynamic Table of Contents and I will transcend to nirvana. Oops. There I go getting all hyperbolic again.

Level 8 (35,825 points)
Mac OS XOnly Pages opens .pages files and even there you have to have the right versions.
However Pages exports to .doc/x, .txt and Pages '09 exports to .rtf.

Aug 12, 2014 6:03 AM in response to Douglas Broylesby Yellowbox,Hi Douglas,
I'm constantly battling the update button to keep my old copy of Pages for iPad so it wouldn't "upgrade" my files to the weaker newer Pages, incompatible format to the older Pages. I wish I could find a way to stop it from trying to "upgrade" me.
This thread is old but has been revived. Here are my settings in System Preferences > App Store to guard my back:
The tick in "Automatically check for updates" keeps me on my toes, but allows me to choose. I get an annoying notification once every day. I just tell it "Later" and "Remind me tomorrow". Then I can check for updates at my leisure. System and security updates are worthwhile.
So far, I have kept Pages 5 from creeping in the back door.
Regards,
Ian.

Nov 14, 2014 2:03 AM in response to Douglas Broylesby mad.maks,Starting with the workaround from floobyduster I would say the only need is to select the search string (including tab or soft-break, or whatever), hit
"cmd e" for "Set selection" in the search options and then "cmd f". The search string is already in the field, so enter your replacement and... done.
However, nevertheless a proper advanced search is necessary. Just starting with Pages 5, I'm afraid of finding out more deficits...
