finder crashes with maverick

Installed Mavericks and shortly thereafter Finder crashed. Error message keeps appearing, click OK to send to Apple and message returns. Tried restart to no avail. Any suggestions?

I am praying that someone can help me. I am currently sitting here with my MacBook (not pro) in front of my attempting to install this stupid maverick. I am terrible with computers and it is 4 am. This is the second time that I am going through the permission verify after verifying my disc. I don't care what I lose because I have my school files backed up. I'm considering taking it into the apple store today to see what they can do. Will they fix this with no charge? My boyfriend explained that it is a very simple process and will definitely be with me since he is better with computer than I. Please no snarky comments, I am simply a 21 year old student who is not very computer literate.

4am is never a good time to install a new OS.

This thread is not about installing Mavericks, so you will get a better responses by creating your own thread & explaining what you have done so far, e.g. has the installer ran at all or are you repairing permissions on the older OS?

I doubt the Apple store will fix for free unless you are within a warranty period, perhaps now is a good time to go to bed & work out what to do tomorrow? It makes sense to wait until your boyfriend can help you unless you have a warranty/ support agreement with Apple.

Make an appoinement for the Genuis bar at your local apple store. They can help you get back up and running and assist with your Mavericks install. It sould not cost you anything (unless there are other physical issues with the machine). Be prepared to maybe hang out for a while. At least it sounds like you have a good backup, which is the most important thing. Good luck.

My 2011 27" Imac has been slow loading files since installing Maverick. Macbook Pros work fine. All of a sudden in December my finder started crashing. Imac would not shut down and I could not reboot the finder. An apple Genius saw the endless finder crashes and reinstalled the operating system. No luck. I read endless posts about Google drive, b ut I dont use it. I saw one about attached hard drive and bingo. I tossed the preferences and unplugged my USB time machine drive (2T Iomega) and it works fine. I was able to use a 2-week old TM backup to restore befor the crashes started. After 1 week seems fine and loads fast. I'm afraid to reconect a drive to my USB port. Is this a Iomega firmware issue or an Apple Maverick issue?

There is no easy way to tell unless you are willing to completly erase and clean install 10.9, test with & without the HD. You'd also need to test the same disk on earlier OS's to see if it fails or causes slow behavior there too.

It's possible 10.9 is repairing the HD or doing indexing etc, they need to be allowed to complete if that is the case.

HD's should just present themselves as mass storage devices, so if you have installed drivers or software for the HD consider removing it. I'd also suggest your own thread since you seem to have isolated your issue to Iomega HD's.

To all of you still havining issues installing Mavericks and getting things to run right: I was having a crash during the upgrade of my MBP late 2007 model and could never get Mavericks to load. The ultimate solution was to backup everything using Time Machine and CCC (can't be too cautious) and reformat the drive even though ALL utilities, including Disk Utility and Drive Geinius, latest version with it's update, reported the drive was otherwise fine. So I ignored the positive report of the various disk utilities and reformatted and installed OSX from the ground up and that was the ultimate fix. That meant reinstalling all my applications, songs, photos, documents, everything, completely from scratch. It took a few weeks to get things back to the state I wanted them, but bottom line is that Mavericks on my Mac runs flawlessly. Moerover, it's much more responsive and dare I say faster in running Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 5 and others. This MBP, late 2007, 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo has been updated with a 7200 rpm 750 GB internal drive and topped out to 6 gigs of ram. That update helped a lot, but under mavericks things are snappier for this old laptop.

Is there a way to determine cause of the crash?

Mac used to have crashreporter but it seems Mavericks has long since disposed of anything so helpful.

I don't think that is the case (but can't check at the moment since I'm not on 10.9).

Issues/ errors/ crashes on Unix machines usually get logged somewhere. Console.app consolidates the various log directories for easy reading. Console is found in /Applications/Utilities.

Crash reporter, hang logs and panic logs will all be shown under the various log list entries.

Deciphering logs is an art in itself.

The message that applezen repeatedly clicked was from crash reported (it helps if you actually make a note of this text).

Terminal will let you 'grep' logfiles but why bother when Console will do it too.

I had these issues and could not fix them so I reverted to the last stable OS. The crash report is still available in Mavericks however it does not work when the freezing is happening. That is not considered a crash anyway.

You must force quit an app to get the crash report window. You can't forcequit because everything is frozen.

I suggest that if you have these problems to revert back to a useful OS. If you really want to use Mavericks , then buy a new computer that comes with it already and has been tested to work.

Get one with the largest amount of RAM you can possibly get.

This upgrade does not work with all systems.

Forgive me if you have posted this, but I can't see any description of what you personally are experiencing SeaSaltShark beyond the rather short description above.

If an app crashed or hung there should be a crash or hang log within Console. I think you usually get the crash dialog when an app dies in a failed state.

The 'All messages' section in Console shows recent info across the system, it may show messages for the timescale when you experience issues (start logging times on paper).

Or you can see if there are logs for the app in question within your logs section (~/Library/Logs) or at the 'system level' (/Library/Logs). Finder may also log messages to the system log, which is owned by the root user (under /private/var/log in Console).

It's really difficult to make out what may be going on from logs, you'll need to look at what was logged before the freeze. Also avoid rebooting for a few minutes incase it is simply some process that needs to finish. If you can replicate the faliure you can view Activity Monitor to see what uses memory or CPU before a freeze.

You should probably try the regular troubleshooting steps like repairing the disk (in recovery mode), booting into safe mode (hold shift & startup) to see if it still occurs, logging in with login items disabled (hold shift as you click 'login') posting an EtreCheck report here to see if you have known incompatible software.

These threads have shown users with old software can have major issues, 10.9 seems to have changed so much that there is a lot of potential for weird confilcts. Clean installing is one option.

I suspect you will get better support if you create your own thread that describes your issues, otherwise you are just expecting people to keep up with how your issue is different from the others here.

That's exactly what happened. Everything frozen except for mouse movement. I even tried screensharing from my MBA. Also waited an hour to give it time to think. Nothing doing. Power button reset the only way out.

I suppose I could go back to an older OS, but that's a major PITA.

I'd really like to know the cause of the crash.

Yes nothing works but to shut it down. It really threw me for a loop since this never happened on a mac. I tried everything to fix it.

The only thing that fixed it was reverting to the old with a time machine backup.

I would like to say that my mac could run 20 apps at once and never ever froze on me. It is fast and gives me no problems. I don't even have to shut it down unless I need to unplug it.

After trying to run Mavericks and getting nowhere , I reverted and everything works as it should.

If you don't need to upgrade, I suggest you don't . Just buy a new mac that was built to handle Mavericks and the new filing system .

It is not worth the trouble and lost work trying to fix something like this. On some computers it worked, on some it simply did not. I was one of those people.

It is frustrating consiering one could fix almost anything on a mac. But the old tricks to fix it somehow do not work, mostly because it constantly freezes and does not allow you to do anything except force restart or shut down.

Rather than risk damaging the computer, just go back to what worked. Even clean installs have had these problems. If you hav a timemachine backup , use it and save yourself the suffering.

>I'd really like to know the cause of the crash.

There are many. You need to discard them one by one by removing them from the system. You can't use multiple apps because they go to sleep, this causes the freezing too...

If you have cloud drives , remove them. If you have chrome anything, remove it. If you hav anything microsoft even a mouse, remove it. If you have bootcamp, remove it. If you have any apps that are not yet compatible with mavericks, remove them.

If you have a guest account or user account , disable it, remove them.

Get the picture ? The cure is worse than the disease. And after removing them there is still no guarantee this will work.

Mavericks is too different for some older systems. It can require more than 16 G of ram to work like the old systems.
