iTunes 11.1.2.31 Won't Finish Sync with iPad 3

I just updated to iTunes 11.1.2.31 and when I sync my iPad (model MD368LL/A) iTunes gets stuck on "Finishing Sync". It does not seem to have any ill effect on the iPad when I disconnect it.

My iPhone 5S syncs without problem.

Nothing works -- restoring phone, deleting and reinstalling 11.1.2, or any odd work-around -- on my 5s. The problem never arose once prior to the 11.1.2 update and exists for me continuously since then. The ultimate rather than proximate fix would be an overhaul of the oldest, clunkiest, and least aesthetic Apple product that I know.

I was having the same syncing problem with my 4S, iTunes 11.1.2 and iOS 7.0.3. Time after time, it would hang up during the "Finishing Sync" process. No new music would be added, nor would playlists be updated.

I went to the Music tab and unchecked "Sync Music." When I did, I got the warning asking me if I wanted all music to be removed from the device. I said yes and did another sync. After doing so, it still was getting hung (although the sync button became active again), and there were still a couple of playlists and songs left on the device (as well as an audiobook). I went to the Books tab and unchecked "Sync Audiobooks" and clicked "Apply." After the sync, once again it was hanging and the sync button became active.

Here's what I think helped: On the iPhone, I deleted the remaining playlists and songs by swiping over them (just as you would delete an email). From then on, when doing a sync, it didn't get hung anymore...Completed the sync process very quickly.

I then re-checked "Sync Music" and "Sync Audiobooks" on their respective tabs and re-selected the playlists and music that I wanted to sync, and everything synched as normal. All new music was added and playlists were updated upon re-uploading.

I'm having similar problems. Reset everything, restored the phone etc. Still occasionally long syncs.

I think they have fundamentally changed the way the sync works. My 'other' section of data used to grow extremely large as I continued syncing or if a sync failed and I used to have to restore my phone after a while to get that 'other' section reduced. I have noticed the 'other section seems to now be signifigantly reduced and not growing. I think itunes is now taking time after the sync and going through and trying to clean up those files. I have left my phone in that state syncing overnight and it does eventually end. When I let it do that the other section is reduced to just a sliver.

If that is what is actually going on I wish they would have an option to do a sync and deep clean or just a normal sync because I don't want to wait hours to sync just to grab a couple of podcasts as I'm trying to leave for work in the morning.

I'll add a "me too" to the thread. Late 2013 iMac OS X 10.9, iTunes 11.1.2 (32), iPhone 5s, iPhone 5, iPhone 4 and original iPad all experiencing the "stuck at finishing sync" issue when syncing via USB.

Per TigerClaw305 (thanks!) clicking on the "Sync" button again fixes it; causing it to go through a very fast sync and complete progress bar back to the Apple logo.

This is clearly an iTunes bug (deep cleaning or otherwise, it shouldn't hang for hours each time). Hopefully they'll update it soon.
