Q: iTunes 11.1.2.31 Won't Finish Sync with iPad 3

I just updated to iTunes 11.1.2.31 and when I sync my iPad (model MD368LL/A) iTunes gets stuck on "Finishing Sync". It does not seem to have any ill effect on the iPad when I disconnect it.

My iPhone 5S syncs without problem.

OK, so this is not anything original:  But iTunes, which began a decade ago for music and drag-and-drop to your iPod, has become bloated by attempting to be a do-all -- a media player of several types, a store, and a sync app for various devices, all built on a decade old and unattractive platform.  Solutions have been offered all over the tech world for this sluggish, buggy, dinosaur of a program, but Apple plods along, which raises this question:  Why does a company that at one time, and in some areas still does (e.g. iOS 7), prided itself on replacing functional old products with revised new ones, which are more attractive and work better, still lumber on with this iTunes format?

Although this is a topic for another thread, I couldn't agree more.  Apple needs to separate out iTunes (music, movies, etc.) from the rest of the support pieces.  This is what's really holding them back from being fully embraced in Enterprise IMHO.  As soon as you mention having to connect an iDevice to "iTunes" for updates, file management, etc. to an uninformed CEO, CFO, etc. they immediately associate it with entertainment rather than business and the conversation gets sidetracked or comes to an immediate end in my experience.

These sorts of bugs may or may not be a result of iTunes trying to be all things, but it certainly can't be helping, again, IMHO.

FWIW I've had the occassion to update our iPhone 4 and iPhone 5s (via USB) the past couple of days.  Like before they both hung on the "Finishing Sync" step.  However this time I left them alone for a few hours.  When I returned both had completed syncing.  Since then I've made a couple of app and music changes and both update and sync almost instantly now.

I don't know if just leaving iTunes to do its thing for a while is the key, but it seems to have resolved the issue, at least in these two instances.

Ok...I really thought brinnie was onto something:

Ok. This is what fixes it; at least with Windows 7 and iOS 7.0.3 on an iPhone 5. The problem appears to be with iTunes, not the phone.

In iTunes go to Preferences, under Advanced Reset then change the iTunes Music folder (You don't need to use another folder, just reselect it). Ok your way out and sync. No more endless Finishing Sync loop!!

When I went to Preferences > Advanced, the iTunes Media folder location was completely empty. I hit the Select button and chose the iTunes Media folder on my external hard drive and hit OK. It then started reorganizing my library, which took about a minute. Then when I did a sync, all was going along well, and the last step (which hung for a while) was "Waiting for items to copy." I was hopeful. When sync was finished, however, none of my new playlists had synched. Upon doing a second sync, the last step which hung forever was "Waiting for changes to be applied." Still no changes applied.

    Sigh.

I switched from USB to Wifi-Sync. Since then everything works properly - on iPhone 4 and iPad 2. USB doesn't work any more. I trigger the sync from the devices, not from the Mac.

Neither USB nor Wifi-Sync works for me. Have tried both, but hangs forever on " Waiting for changes to be applied," and when finished, there is are no changes applied.

For the record, app updates seem to take place, but no updates to playlists or music.

I was having the same problem with Mavericks, iTunes 11.1.2 and iOS 7.0.3 and my iPad 2.  iTunes would not sync with my iPad via wifi OR USB.  After several attempts, rebooting, soft resets, etc., I went to Settings > iTunes in my iPad, and logged out of my AppleID (for iTunes).  While signed out, I went to iTunes and clicked Sync for my iPad and it's finally working!  Let's see what happens when I log back into to iTunes with my AppleID on my iPad.  Good luck everyone!

Very frustrating! Wish I hadn't updated iTunes as that's when all the synching problems started. Have spent a couple of hours today trying to sort it out. Backed up, erased all settings, restored - no deal.

Had been synching my iphone 4S by cable to my Mac, so tried the fix of unchecking 'Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected' in the Summary window, and checking 'Sync with this phone over Wi-Fi'.

    This worked! Hurrah!

I'm having this problem with iTunes 11.1.2.32

For the Apple guys who might think that the problem was fixed with the newer build..

This worked for me too!! I signed out on my iPhone 4S (and I actually signed out on iTunes on my Mac, too, just to be safe), and it synched successfully, adding all my music and new playlists! I did get a notice that 13 things didn't sync (a result, I suppose, of my having signed out on the Mac). I signed back in on both devices, made some changes (unchecked a couple of playlists and artists to sync) and did another sync. Although it hung a little on "Waiting for changes to be applied," all changes were made. I've done two more successful test syncs.

    Bravo, Rick.A...thank you!!!

    Same for me !

I signed out of my device (but not on my computer)

Try to sync right after, got stuck 2-3 minutes on "Waiting for changes to be applied" and finally appeared: Copying 1 of 448 (# of songs that disappeared suddenly from my iphone)... and went on!

    Thanks a lot !!

Update: after successfully synching, I logged back in to to iTunes acct on my iPad and have still been able to synch.  Looks like the same fix has been working for a few already.  Glad to hear!
