I installed os x mavericks and now the volume controls on my mac don't work. It does not recognize the audio output as internal speakers in the settings either. Advice?

Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
Then try the volume.

I started iTunes, clicked on play and then plugged-in and out my headphones several times until suddenly the internal speakers have been recognised again.

Which preferences were those? I hadn't noticed anything similar. It does clear some caches, but I've never found that noticable, either.
