Q: Mavericks seems to break Scanner compatibility.

I can't use my high speed Canon DR2010c scanner after upgrading to Mavericks. It's not being recognized by Image Capture and there are no Canon-supplied TWAIN drivers since (according to Canon) Apple supplies the drivers. The scanner shows up in System Profiler.

According to other posters, Epson scanners are having the same issue.

Help is appreciated.

Correction: ImageCapture won't show TWAIN devices, but if an App invokes the TWAIN driver from outside ImageCapture, the scanner works.

How do you edit your own post, BTW?

Withing 15 minutes there should be and Edit link next to the Like and Reply link.

If you fail to find a fix give ViewScan a try.  You can check at its website to see if your scanner is supported. I would be surprised if it wasn't.

I have a Canoscan LiDE 500f. Canon support has sent me an e-mail saying that it will no longer be supported. It's hard to believe some technology has changed so drastically in OS 10.9 over 10.8 that it just stops working.

How did you get software to force the TWAIN driver to start working? I tried Photoshop CS6 and Pixelmator 3.0 with no luck so far.

Give VueScan a try. As I said you can check at its website to see if your scanner is supported.  Also you can try VueScan in demo mode.

Also see if Image Capture can recognize your scanner and scan with it.

Thanks, Old Toad, but that didn't work.

Hopefully something comes up versus replacing a perfectly fine scanner.

So, my scanner could not be read my ImageCapture, or any third party apps for that matter, either, but after going to the scanner page in Sytem Prefferences clicking on the scanner, and opening it that way, it worked fine.
    ably different

Also, my scanner is probably different though, since my drivers came from the scanner manufacturer not built in to OS X.  I still suggest you try it out though, might work out your issues

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not ready to blow cash on a 2 year old, 500 dollars, professional high-speed scanner.

I didn't force them Dex, the drivers are sitting there, it's just that ImageCapture's backend apparently broke compatibility. I didn't do anything, I just invoked the scanning inside Adobe Acrobat.

    YMMV.

Something to keep in mind, though; Mavericks is completely 64 bit, maybe ImageCapture and its backend still had some 32-bit code. Canon is just HORRIBLE with driver support. Actually I can't think of a major japanese electronics company with decent drivers on the Mac. They could also have blame on this since they keep very old code, like from the OS 9 era (carbon).

Holy ****, Carbon use in OS X... Rossetta isn't even supported anymore, and they haven't gotten past OS 9... ****

    Jorge! Yes!

Totally worked from Adobe Acrobat Pro...thank you for the suggestion.

That's my guess. C'mon, these Japanese corporations have 0 concerns for efficient code, they just sell products for the profit, not customer satisfaction. I can say with 90% certainty that their Windows drivers still carry code from Windows '98. Do you think it's not the same with the Mac?

Happy to help Dex. TBH, If I were you I would start saving towards a newer scanner or purchase VueScan, since SANE drivers for your model have been in development for 7 years.

VueScan is compatible with your scanner: http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/canon_lide_500f.html

I have been using a CanoScan 4400F connected to my iMac for several years with no issues. I use it with Vuescan and Image Capture.

After the Mavericks update, it was no longer recognized. System Profiler sees it but says it is unconfigured. I tried adding it in System Prefs-Printing & Scanning but still does not show up. This morning I see an updated driver listing at the Canon site that lists 10.9 Mavericks as supported. I first deleted the previous TWAIN driver as directed by the Read Me file. Installed the new driver, restarted, and sadly no change. Back to not having a usable scanner. I have sent feedback (under Mavericks) to Apple as well on this.

Apple is not to blame here, Canon has the drivers. You should contact VueScan's developer about Mavericks compatibility.
