Cannot print to Canon iR3380i after Mavericks update

We have a small office network. All machines print to our Canon iR3380i copier. The iR3380i has a static IP address in our internal network. All machines currently use OS X Lion.

I updated my machine (2011 MacBook Air 13") to OS X Mavericks last night and can no longer print. Here are the error messages and steps I've taken:

1) First I got "Error 16801"

  • To solve this I visited the Canon site to download the latest UFRII driver (v10.2.0) for the iR3380i
  • I removed the current printer, updated my driver with the new UFRII driver
  • I re-added the printer

2) Next I got "The printed output may be incorrect because the printer information has not been acquired. Start Printer Utility to get the printer information."

The only option at this point is to hit "OK".

3) Next dialog box says "Cannot communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again, then start Printer Utility to get the printer information."

  • Again, the only option I got was to hit "OK".
  • The printer icon appears in the Dock with a PAUSE symbol and the 1 Job Pending alert.
  • Opening the Printer Queue box shows one job in the queue.
  • Hitting "Resume" generates the dialog box "Cannot communicate..." again.

And that's it. I cannot figure out what else to do. Help please!

I think your issue is that even though you have the latest 10.2.0 driver for 10.9, you added the printer using the previous v2.43 PPD. So open Print & Scan, remove the current printer for the iRC3380 and click the plus button to add again. After selecting IP > LPD and entering the IP address, ensure you select "Canon iR C2880/C3380" in the Use menu. Note that there is no mention of UFRII in the model name, as is the case with the previous UFR2 v2.43 driver.

Carolyn, thanks for the suggestion. I did go to the Canon website to get the latest drivers, I think perhaps the problem is that Canon doesn't make a driver specifically for Mavericks at this time. See screenshots below:

When I let the Canon website select my driver for me, same thing:

So I had to select the latest version I could find, which was for Mountain Lion but came out about two weeks ago:

It doesn't seem like Mavericks would be all that different from Mountain Lion in the print department, but this is probably the case...?

Thanks for the suggestion. I did that this morning (see Step 1) and deleted the existing printer before re-adding a new printer and using the newly updated driver and printer description. Here's what I get:

You can see my model number is listed in there as is the the proprietary Canon UFRII language.

Once added, here's what happens next:

So it would appear, at this point, that the printer is installed and communicating and that I should be good to print.

Alas, I get the same error message I've been getting. back to square one.

This is where you are making the mistake. You are selecting the entry listed with UFRII in the name. This PPD is a leftover from the previous v2.43 driver. The new v10.2.0 driver lists the models without UFRII in the name. So in your case, select the one above the one you have selected in the image above - shown as Canon iR C2880/C3380.

I have the exactly same error message and issue after updating to OS X Mavericks but with a different printer (Canon iR C1022i) I was only able to print after connecting the printer directly to the USB port and not using the Ethernet connection to reinstall the printer, but I was able to use the same old Canon Driver, even though the Canon site does not provide for a new update OS X Mavericks print driver version.

This issue needs to be fixed, I think is related to the IP port creation under the Apple Printer & Scanners, it is not communicating to Canon factory driver as before when using the Ethernet ip connection, if you plug the printer straight to the computer USB port it should work!!!

I have an open case with support. Either Canon needs to fix all of their drivers or Apple needs to fix their IP printer port.

Meanwhile our $5,000 dollars network printer is out of reach!!!!

It is a new driver - it was released earlier this month in preparation for Mavericks. You may already have it. Canon could not disclose it was for 10.9 until Apple released it. So now it's just a matter of getting websites updated to show support for 10.9.

You can check what version you are using by opening Print & Scan, selecting the iRC1022i in the Printers list and then opening Options & Supplies. Under the General tab you will see Driver Version. If you have something earlier than 10.2.0, then you should update.

Here is a link to the UFR2 v10.2.0 driver. You will see that 10.9 is mentioned in the supported OS list.

Note also that when you add the network printer, you need to select the iRC1022i entry that does not mention UFRII in its name. The new v10.2.0 driver will just show your model as "Canon iR C1021/C1022". Note also that when you added the printer via USB, the correct Printer/PPD would have been selected by the OS. So you just need to ensure you select the same entry for when you create the network printer.

Thanks PAHU. Issue solved on ImageRunner 5075

some people in our office didn't have a driver issue after upgrading to Mavericks - possibly they were on a newer version of the driver already.

Use PAHU's link http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0100491502.html

I deleted printer and reinstalled it via Apple Printer/Scanners function after installing the above new driver.

Hi Pahu,

THanks a lot for the help..

Dear All concerned facing this problem,

Just follow the method that PAHU has given. I am mentioning the steps once again for everyones convenience.

1. Delete the old printer from System Preferences > Printers and Scanners.

2. Download the DMG file for fresh driver for Mac OS 10.9 from your printer manufacturer's website.

3. Install the driver.

4. Add a new printer from System Preferences > Printers and Scanners

5. In case of network printers, add the IP address of printer, select LPD in protocol, Under "Use" section, go to select software and select your printer's software.

6. Remember all these years you were selecting the UFR II version of the driver. For e.g. if you were using Canon iR 2018 printer, the earlier driver was Canon iR 2018 UFR II. Do not select the UFR II instead select Canon iR 2018 only.

7. The driver is installed and ready to use.

Cheers and Happy printing on Mavericks!!

Rahul.
