Lacie external HD not 'spinning down' when Mac is put to sleep

Installed Mavericks on my late 2009 27" iMac and all seems to be running fine, except now my external Lacie d2 Quadra 1TB HD doesn't spin down properly when the mac is put to sleep.

Previously both mac and HD would spin down to silent when the former is put to sleep, but now the Lacie stays whirring away happily all night.

I connect through Firewire 800, and strangely when I swap the connection to USB2 the drive spins down properly as it should, but I'd rather not connect in this way as I prefer the faster speeds and freed up USB port.

I've tried installing a firmware update from the Lacie website but that keeps throwing up an error and I can't apply the patch.

Anyone find anything similar happening for them since they installed the new OS?

Same here. Have three external enclosures (inXtron SK-3500 Super-S3) all connected via FireWire 800 and all of them do not spin down the drives on Sleep or Eject since upgrading to Mavericks. Tested with three different Macs (iMac 2008, MacBook Pro 2009, MacBook Pro 2011).

Used to work with Mountain Lion.

Funny thing is, when connecting the external drives via USB they DO spin down on Sleep or Eject.

Only workaround so far - full shutdown.

Hope to get some fix soon.

Found out a little bit more - according to the Lacie website, my type of external HD spins down if it detects the power to the firewire port cutting out when the connected mac is put to sleep. It states that that the auto sleep function won't work properly if the PC continues to supply power to the Firewire port even if the machine is put on standby.

My theory is that Mavericks changed something in the way the OS works - previously the power to the firewire port was turned off when mac went to sleep, but since the update the power now stays constant. Perhaps the power to the USB ports still cuts out properly, hence why the drive spins down as it should when connected in that way.

Having the same issue. Two WD firewire 800 drives. Most times none of the drives go to sleep, some times only one will spin down (the same one each time) and it sleeps sometimes even while the computer is awake but the data on the dirive is not being accessed.

drives are being accessed via Thunderbolt to firewire converter.

➕FIrewire & Thunderbolt drives are having issues with Mavericks, avoid same until a fix is issued if you can.

many are reporting same, there is a firewire fault and TB HD on external HD from LaCie (Seagate) and from WD especially.

Technicians are looking into it.

Until there is resolution, consider setting up a USB ext. Time machine HD.

Until then consider confining Mavericks use with USB HD.

Ive tested a very long line of USB HD on Mavericks, all seem fine.

DasBoot23

Can confirm same is happening with my Neil Poulton Lacie 1TB via FW800 on Late 2011 Macbook Pro.

All indications are that most Thunderbolt and FW ext. drives are affected as per the sleep issue.

Connect as needed, until then use formatted USB drives with NO control software, .........extensive testing shows this is perfectly fine on over 30+ drives on 2 diff. machines in 10.9

Attach NO RAID arrays of HD either. 😊
