Yes, I am having the same problem. I just purchased the new Keynote 6.0. I have dozens of Keynote presentations that I need all the time. They were done with iWorks '08 (Keynote 4.0.4). When I try to open them in the Keynote 6.0 I get the error message:

"This presentation can't be opened because it's too old. To open it, save it with Keynote '09 first."

I can't imagine that this means I have have to go purchase Keynote '09 when I just bought Keynote '11.

This is crazy...HELP!

Worked something out...

Stupid but true...

We two didn't update from keynote 08 to 09 but went straigt to keynote 13 (the real numbers are I believe 4.x, 5.x, and now we are at 6.x. We skipped the 5.x)

Maveric doesn't overwrite the old 4,x on the harddisk.

It is still there in the Apliccation map BUT IN THE iWORKS FOLDER

But stupidly enough the keynotes don't FIND this application anymore...

So this is what you do.

Go to Appications->iWorks-> manually dubbleclick the BROWN keynote icon-> drag the keynote you want to play to the icon....... Ttatatatatatatata!

It runs on the old application....

THEY WILL NOT OPEN IN 6.x (2013)

unless you find somewhere an (2009) version....

STUPID!!!!!

Keynote works in Mavericks and also runs with Keynote 6.1 installed.

this routine usually sorts most problems with Keynote 5, complete all the steps in the correct order:

1 - Remove keynote, (use Appcleanerfrom Mac Update to do this, it is freeware)

2 - shut down the Mac

3 - Start up in safe mode by pressing the shift key immediately after the start chime and until the Apple symbol appears) it will take longer to start up as the OS is being repaired

3 - When the Mac is fully booted, go to: Applications > Utilities > Disk utility

click the System hard drive in the list then first aid tab > Repair Disc

4 - Reboot normally

5 - re-install iWork and install updates for Keynote from: Apple Menu > Software update

- The older version of Keynote still doesn't work with Mavericks 10.9.2

For most users, Keynote 5.3 works as it should running under Mavericks.

- Keynote 6.1 does of course work, but is unable to open older keynote files

Yes this is very irritationg, however best advice is to use 5.3 for projects created in that version, and to use 6.1 for new projects.
