After upgrading to OS X Mavericks, you will probably lose OS X Server because the version you have got is designed for Mountain Lion. After upgrading, you will be able to purchase Mavericks Server in the Mac App Store.
Make a backup of your data with Time Machine and check that your applications are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com
So the cost of upgrading to Maverick is not free it is $19.99 if you are running OSX Server.
You are right
I'm one of the victim, just upgraded my Mac mini server without asking anyone and lost my OS X server, apple should have warned about this...... ****......
I did upgrade.... four days debugging the tomcat app server, problems with time machines and a few other issues that I rolled back the operating system updates. I am staying with 10.8.5 ML
