iTunes 11 on WinXP Home SP3 Italy not working at all

I have just installed iTunes 11 (the up-to-date one) on WinXP Home SP3 (Italy), but it is not working at all:

interface shows inactive buttons along with sub-menu choices; all but "exit" and "?"

Connecting a device (iPhone) it is detected and images are automatically transferred;

as well as all tests (from "?" menu) are passed.

The button relevant to the device is shown but is not active.
