Hey ItsaJimThing,
Great question. Apple announced that qualifying Mac purchases after October 1st, 2013 would be eligible for the Up-To-Date program. Unfortunately, from the information you provided, it does not sound like your Mac qualifies for this program.

On October 22, 2013, Apple announced that its Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps are available free with every qualifying new Mac. If you purchased a qualifying Mac on or after October 1, 2013, that did not include Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, you can download them free by following the steps below.
You can still enjoy all of the great benefits of the new iWork suite by purchasing it from the Mac App Store. Or, if you had previously purchased iWork ’09, feel free to update to the new versions by visiting the updates section:

Thanks,

Even better, find a copy of iWork '09. As you can see from reading some of other threads on these boards, it's much more powerful, and for many people easier to use, than the new versions.
I honestly can't recomend paying money for the new versions, though they're nice as freeware.
