iCloud: Troubleshooting Find My iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac

Device appears in Find My iPhone, but is offline

    This can occur if:

    • Your device is powered off, such as when the battery has run out. Note that the remaining battery for the device, if it's connected to the Internet, displays in the upper-right corner of the information pane of the selected device. You can still play a sound on, send a message to, issue a lock request, or initiate an erase of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The command will be received after the device is turned on and regains its Internet connection.
    • Your iPhone’s cellular service has been terminated by your wireless service provider. If you contacted your service provider to report your device lost or stolen before locating your phone, and they deactivated your SIM card or account, this would be expected. If this is the case, you may no longer be able to locate, display a message on, or erase your iPhone. For more information, read about what to do if your device is lost or stolen.
    • Your iPad, iPod Touch, or Mac is asleep and not connected to a known Wi-Fi network. You will still be able to request an erase, send a message to display and lock your device, or request that a sound be played. The command will be processed when your device is awakened and connected to the Internet.

    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.

    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.

    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police

    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 on the device. With iOS 7, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.

    - Apple will do nothing without a court order

what your saying is right but..For an ipod its not the case iPods cant connect to an internet connection on its own (unless its around any known networks) if it has a pass code no one will be able to connect it to a network then it becomes almost impossible to locate

That's not entirely true.  Current Comcast routers have two WiFi systems, a normal locked router for the subscriber and a public one called "Xfinity WiFi."  If my iPod is within range of any up-to-date Comcast router anywhere in the United States, it will connect to Xfinity WiFi automatically.  It was necessary for me to manually connect ONCE to ONE Xfinity WiFi system.  Absolutely no interaction on my part is required for any subsequent connection anywhere.  Technically, all Xfinity WiFi systems are "known."

Also, many restaurants and other businesses have unlocked WiFi systems and, if configured properly, an iPod WILL connect automatically.

Same here dude, but it was lost on a field near a primary school where i always go through, in a muddy area, and the earphones were attatched and now i am utterly depressed. I slipped, and then i ran because for that one day my bag was open. Find my ipod is uselesss, how the meow does someone connect an IPOD to the internet when its locked, because GENIUS, you need a wifi passcode unless you go the the house of the person who lost it - there the wifi is recognised. nobody will take a lost ipod to maccas. find my ipod is useless on ipods offline. you have yo try and get it back and keeep it safe i have learnet my freaking lesson.
