iphoto 8.1.2 doesn't update to Mavericks edition... ($14.99??)

Are you still able to use iPhoto 8.1.2 and iMovie 9.0.4 with Mavericks?

I'm also trying to find out if iTunes 10.5 and iWork '08 are compatible with the new OS.

iPhoto 8.1.2 works just fine in OS X Mavericks. It just doesn't take advantage of iCloud or the 64-bit power of Mavericks. Also, ever since Mountain Lion, the OS X screensaver cannot see the old iPhoto Library.

I don't know about iMovie 9.0.4, as I only have 8.0.6.

I did the same upgrade and, although my iPhoto 8.1.2 does run under Mavericks, it takes it about 40 seconds to load most of the time. Occasionally, after a restart, it opens quickly but before long reverts to the 40 second beachball delay. I don't think I'll spring for the $15 upgrade since so many users are complaining about it.

I did upgrade in the end, because it took so long for 8.1.2 to open in Mavericks.

iPhoto 8.1.2 is marginally compatible with Mavericks. Usesr report problems with exporting slideshows, exporting photos outside of iPhoto just to name a couple. Be sure to turn off all photo sharing in iPhoto's Sharing preference pane and set the Web pane like this:

Otherwise you may frequently get the SWOD (spinning wheel of death) upon launch or at other times.

That is only part of the error message. Usually it is accompanied by a crash log.

But anyway, there are so many issues with running iPhoto 8.1.2 on Mavericks - you simply cannot use it reliably. Upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1, if you do not want to risk data loss by frequent iPhoto crashes.

This would be great info if I could launch iPhoto.

But what is the full error message? Where is your iPhoto Library located?

You simply need to backup your iPhoto library and purchase and install the iPhoto 9.5.1 upgrade from the App store - then you will be fine

I thought that might be the best. But when I read this discussion I saw that everyone seemed to be able to open iPhoto 8.1.2 in Mavericks. So I thought maybe I was doing something wrong.
