Will an upgrade to Mavericks erase all my software etc?

Easy question:

As with an iPhone major OS update, it erases the entire phone and you must re-sync it to install your backup, will updating my iMac erase my entire computer essentially removing all photos, music, software etc?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion, 27", 12GB RAM

Mac OS installations or updates do not erase your data (unless you explicitly ask it to). Having said that, things occasionally go wrong and a backup is always a good idea.
