After installing Mavericks I noticed my iMessage whale ballons changed colors. Some of my friends ballons have changed colors to yellow, pink, and purple. On my iPhone they are still grey.
Am I able to change it? Did my friends set it this way?

I noticed that, too. You can change that in iMessage settings. 😉 cmd-,

Any joy in finding out what the yellow and purple balloons mean?

So in iMessage open Messages --> Preferences then the viewing tab as below:
All fair and well. Was just curious why if it is set to 'automatic', that you get all different colors from different contacts. Sometimes the same contact will change from grey to yellow for example. That is without me making any changes.
Did you ever get an answer to your question? I have the same question. Why do some of my conversations in iMessage on the new operating system now have different colors (yellow, purple/pink) when previously they were all grey? I never made any setting changes. Most people are still grey, but a couple were, seemingly randomly chosen, to have different colors
