I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!
Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

Hey whatever. I just teach UX development to graduate students. And their general sentiment is frustration at Apple for 9 years straight of terrible decisions made for the lowest common denominator customers. Bet you think listing by album in iTunes is a dumb thing I should get over too.
Graduate students use something they say they dislike for another 9 years? Were they taught that they have options? As mentioned, most Graphic Designers I know moved on years back and their production levels have certainly not dropped. You have been given two options. If you don't wish to use them then maybe change OSs? There is another very popular one.
iTunes debate belongs in the iTunes Forums.

Are you suggesting that poor UX is something to be brushed off even though we are taking about Apple -- the most innovative User Experience drive company of all time? You are ok with them dropping the ball over and over again shuck as in this instance: making file organization more difficult in the name of "it looks prettier". You also did not present an argument, you just don't like me because I'm challenging your ideas.
No, I know there are people who disliked this particular change which took place years ago. I just can't understand why anyone would use something they were not happy with for 9 years when there are other options available. I am not here to argue, I simply respond to comments given or questions asked. As I say, in this case those options are available. If you are still not happy then contact Apple and argue it with them.
Have a nice day
Cheers

Your suggestion to stop using Mac and switch to Windows because of UI is absurd. 9 years of freefall and it's still better than Windows. Constant feedback to Apple and protest by flooding the forums with accusations of complacency on Apple's behalf and hostility from customer disgust is better than switching to a platform with no commitment to design whatsoever.

I think Microsoft is doing a LOT better with design and software and UI these days.
They are doing things that Apple should have persuing. Especially new innovative hardware geared toward the design creatives and art professionals.
Have you had a look at current crop of Microsoft Surface tablets?
The new Microsoft Surface Studio computer with large drafting table designed touch/stylus screen monitor looks and works like something Apple should have designed and built, but didn't.
Even Dell is doing much better with design innovation and pricing these days with their mew table-like computer/touch screen monitor combo and with their new monitor drawing tablets.
I feel Apple is just walking along just milking previous innovation and not really pushing the industry ahead, any longer.
Apple has been asleep at the wheel since its founder's death.
Apple needs a leader, not a caretaker looking after the company's own coffers and cash horde and the cash horde of its major shareholders, like Smaug the Dragon.
I agree and disagree. Things like this particular issue where Apple tried to innovate their own color tagging system suggest their desire to move forward, but their implementation is actually so bad it renders the feature unusable.
With regards to Windows, they have been making some great improvements, especially with the surface, but that's really only great when compared to tablets. For desktop or work, OS X 10.6.8 is the penacle of ease of use for production in my opinion.

That is a very broad statement. And simply an opinion. Many millions seem to be coping fine. But now you are just arguing for arguments so I'm out.

Ahab - The thing you have to recognize is that Apple didn’t “ innovate their own color tagging system” they removed color Labels and introduced a new Meta Tagging system.
The color Dots in the new system are the product of a more in depth file management system and simple “color labels” have been removed. IMHO the color labels were removed because the developers wanted to continue to utilize colors in the tagging system but the new system provides for multiple tags (colors). So, rather than using both color “Labels” AND the new color “Tags” (Dots) they remove the ability to simply highlight files and folders with a color in an effort to encourage users to learn the new tagging features.
Now that some third party developers have taken the time to create Label Apps I don’t think Apple will restore the Label feature to OS X.
Here’s an article that articulates the topic well and lists some third party alternatives.

RE: OS 10.6.8 - As a Music Producer, Sound Designer & Video Editor I do miss that OS too. But I also remember how much I complained about the death of OS9.
I still have faith in Apple.
Anyway… Onward !
While I do recognize the difference and applaud the expansion of features, I also recognize it is poorly designed. Why is the dot way over there on the right where it's difficult to tell which file its associated with? Can it be on the left immediately before the name? It's really just not useful anymore because it's hard to read. It's a flawed and unresolved design. I'm fine with the intellectual effort they put fourth, but why did they not rectify the new issues that surfaced with the new UI?

Also by stating "nobody" shares this criticism, you are ignoring the 177 page thread for which you are posting in.
Can you point out in which of my posts I said "nobody" shares this criticism? If you mean my post of 1:15p on this date, I did make a type in which I said "no everyone" instead of "not everyone" which is a great deal different that "nobody".

Actually this is the kind of discourse that a design firm or tech company spends thousands and thousands of dollars arguing about. But thanks for your thorough input.
Yes, they argue about it because people have different opinions. There is no such thing as one "right" user interface. There are definitely ones people passionately like and ones people passionately hate. I'm certainly not judging the validity of anyone's opinions, just people's insistence that they, somehow, know the right answer and all others are wrong.
It's poorly designed from a usability perspective. Sometimes the dot is 12 inches away -- even 2 inchs away is difficult to read. This is easy to tell and dose not require a degree in design or engineering. Now, the opposing opinion is that it looks nicer and has more functionality, so you are correct in that you can agree with Apple about which aesthetic is better. But functionally speaking you are wrong -- unless your eyes beam lazer grids at the things you are looking at to help you see alignment on digital displays that are otherwise difficult to read.

No, my opinion about the user interface is no more wrong than yours is. I never found the colored folders anything but ugly, never used them and didn't know they were gone until it was pointed out to me. In my opinion, they are superfluous. And did I mention ugly?
Well there we have it. You didn't use this tool before, you don't use it now. You have nothing to contribute to the discussion about its value and no insights into how the newer functionality is better or worse than the old.
Y
es it was ugly, however integral it's role was as part of my workflow and many others, it was ugly.
