I don't think he actually did it in Finder

Oct 30, 2013 4:42 AM in response to Jumberbunchby Wizard_Magic_Spell,What a tease! I thought he was onto something there. Oh well,to Apple I must complain....again!

Oct 30, 2013 8:23 AM in response to Jumberbunchby putnik,It was in the Preview of a screen shot. I had to make it semi-opaque to get the text to show through... but it was only meant as an example, to accommodate the two things, labels and tags.
With tags I can finally have project based filing again. Perhaps you don't use iCloud.

Oct 30, 2013 2:59 PM in response to Madashelluphereby cfe,I love the new Mavericks OS...however, I have a lot of files I used tags on. Now, it is next to impossible to quickly located the labels I had as they was a reason for every color. The small dot is foolishness. If it wasn't broke, why fix it? Nobody compalined before.
Seems some techy decided he or she liked dots and they added it....bad decision! I agree with others, it is now at least twice as hard to find my important color coded files.
Sinces Jobs, Mac software has suffered any major ground breaking improvements. Certainly, using these "hard to see" dots would never have been approved by Jobs. Does Apple even listen to us anymore? The labels should be put back in on the next upgrade as an option, so those few who love dots can have fun.
Funny, I see no blog of lovers of the dotted tags!

Where are you getting your figures from? (so those few who love dots, etc)
Thanks

I agree, but try using the new Tabs in Finder with the new Tags:
The files can be anywhere on your Mac, and with Tags will be listed as:

Oct 30, 2013 3:18 PM in response to cfeby putnik,I think you are confusing "colour labels" in Finder with the new Mavericks "file tag" system. This new system puts meta data ""tags" on individual files. They are viewed from the associated "tag label".
It is a good idea to give each tag name a colour, so that a dot appears in Finder to indicate the file has been tagged. (I don't used colour names as I can't remember what colour does what). A file can have several tags for different uses, so tag labels are more flexible than traditional folders (like albums in iPhoto).
Here are mine, for an example only. Note I tag all iCloud files with a blue tag, so I know which are on my computer and which are not. Also note that I have different apps listed, so it is a project based file system, that includes iCloud files.

Oct 30, 2013 4:52 PM in response to Silly Old Codgerby joyful_one,Yeah, and the thing is I had all my backgrounds coloured black, so my nicely coloured file names shone out so bright.
Since the upgrade I cant read the file names they now have a little coloured dot only. I have to go in and change the background colour to at least see the file names!

Oct 31, 2013 2:15 AM in response to crgmdwsby cfe,The examples to support the DOTS are only your concept. In practical use and business use they are horrible and hard to see. Not everyone codes apps or even uses icloud. If we code clients data by type and the folders contain the types and the folders have different tags, it is impossible to sort out like your example.
The real solution is easy, just allow the option of labels or tags or both. That's not hard to program in a Mac OS and it allows the user to chose which is better for them. Not Apple deciding what the user should use. Most of us old time Mac Users really are starting to miss the creativiity and thoughtfulness of jobs. These new program creators are stuck in the World of Tweeting and Apps and not the hands on World of computing for all users. Pretty sad state for future operating systems. When they chose the term "Mavericks" for the new OS, it certainly fits how the new system was programed. It means "persons who refuse to follow the customs or rules of a group." That ceratinly shows in this new OS from Apple.
Sure hoped they would have continued with names like "Bengal Tiger" - "Siberian Tiger" - "Black Panther " - "White Lion" -

Oct 31, 2013 2:26 AM in response to cfeby Silly Old Codger, cfe I do agree with your comments.
It was unfortunate that the original post on this thread was titled "I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders".
Was a shame that it was not just titled "need coloured folders".
As you say the solution is easy, just allow the option of labels or tags or both.

Oct 31, 2013 7:19 AM in response to Silly Old Codgerby Tracy E,Yes, the solution is easy. Let Tags and Labels coexist. The graphic design is a bit tricky, and the risk of feature confusion is there also. But face it Apple, as great as Tags are, the color aspect of Tags is almost useless.

Oct 31, 2013 9:23 AM in response to hotwheels 22by Laralyn10,Hotwheels, I just love how you had meanings like “magenta was some odd item that needed to be addressed”
there is no tag for that! label is the best way to do it I’ve found.
these were my label meanings:
yellow = important. like a master or source file. If I open a project folder, the yellow one/s are the one/s I’m looking for 90% of the time.
orange = an alternate version of a master file which may or may not be used anymore…
grey = Sent to client. Taken care of. Seen. Watched.
blue = old or irrelevant, but might still need it at some point. ALSO, a photo or video I've watched but want to re-visit at some point for whatever reason.
green = approved. final export. that kinda thing.
red = new, not dealt with yet, possibly important.
purple = favourite version
the purpose of these meanings is that they're not closely defined. They're quite abstract.. like on blue, you can sort of see the connection between being old, but also being something you want to re-visit. I didn't ever sort things by label- I just used list view and the labels would tell me everything I needed to know while skimming the folder/file names at the same time. I think it was that duality that helped so much. Because I can still SEE the dumb dots. Yeah they're small and sometimes they're way over on the right and you can't see them unless you bring the window forward. But seeing the dot and then tracing over to the name is just no good compared to seeing both at the same time.
