Q: I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

Call me crazy, but I still don't understand the problem(s).

Labels:  in Finder preferences, under TAGS, you can rename any tag and change any tag's color.  Can you not label the red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple (and grey??) to your original labels and set any and all other tags to no color?  Seems this would solve both problems -- replace the legacy labels and still have the convenience of tags.  (OK, the little dots will still be next to your 'labeled' files/folders but there's apparently no way around that.)

Desktop:  Since you can specify to have windows reopen upon restart, I really am confused why a Desktop window is any less useful than the actual desktop.  In the Desktop window, your files/folders themselves won't be colored, but their titles will be.

Text of folder/file names is light only when selected.

Labels are like good old Brother Labels that come in various colors. There's a reason that Brother offers its labels not only in white but also in yellow, red, blue, orange, and even black. The absence of colored file names is not a problem but an inconvenience. And those silly tag dots are a nuissance, like mosquito ****.

I use Apple products for convenience, not to be bothered by installing work arounds, utilities, tools and helper apps.

Navigating through my files efficiently should feel like driving on the Autobahn. File names lined with a clear color help me move faster than following Botts' Dots on the 405.

Oops -- I neglected to include the most important information.

All the above works IF you install XtraFinder, a free Finder enhancement app.  It runs as an application with no hooks into the Finder but allows everything I mentioned above.

    +1

Something was actually *wrong* with the way that the original labels worked?  Not that I could see

Yes this has been said many times on this thread. Try XtraFinder of send feedback to Apple.

BinaryAge has returned pre-Mavericks labels to the Finder!

It is still in pre-release, but version 1.5.29 or later of TotalFinder can be accessed now.

    http://totalfinder.binaryage.com/beta-changes

The developer is still perfecting the shape and color of the labels based on user feedback:

    What a legend!

I am curious why you are telling us as well as Apple, what can we do for you?

Why would I assume you have? You never told us either way in your posts. But you are very good for doing so. Just hold many many many many more also do. I won't. I love the advanced abilities of Tags.

    Sleep well

I have tested both XtraFinder and the pre-release of TotalFinder 1.5.29.

I personally think that the implementation in TotalFinder looks much closer to the Labels from Mountain Lion and earlier. However, it is true that XtraFinder has a key advantage in being free.

Anyway, it is great to see that third party developers stepped in to cater for those of us who prefer the visual look of the earlier Labels, whilst preserving the functionality of the new tags system.

Both these developers deserve a big pat on the back.

Then go give them one. No kudos for the Pathfinder developers? Or Apple for all those who love the new tags implementation? That's a bit biased.

Why the sarcasm Pete? Please tell me what was biased about my post, as there was no criticism of Apple there.

For the record, I was aware of Pathfinder, but it is a Finder replacement, not a patch to the Finder as these recent products are.

It's actually quite funny that you accused me of being biased when the title of this thread is 'I hate the new tags...'

Incidentally, I like the functionality behind the new tags, but prefer having a clearer visual cue compared to the small dots.
