Q: I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

I personally think that the implementation in TotalFinder looks much closer to the Labels from Mountain Lion and earlier. However, it is true that XtraFinder has a key advantage in being free.

    ...

    Thanks for the report, Adam.

I am trying XtraFinder and am mostly happy with it -- lightweight, gets me most of the lost coloring functionality (not for folders on the desktop), and FREE! <g>  But it does have one not-so-great behavior that I'm wondering if TotalFinder would restore for me.  Namely:  with XtraFinder, when I have a window open in List view, I can no longer drag over the names of several items to select them all.  XtraFinder 'grabs' the first one touched and then begins to move it if I continue the drag action.  (And, yes, I've reported this to the vendor but not heard anything back.)

If TotalFinder lets me multi-select in the old/standard way then it's worth a look.

    Thanks again!

    You're welcome keriah.

I can report that the drag-select functionality you have mentioned does appear to work when using TotalFinder 1.5.29

Unlike XtraFinder, TotalFinder restores the label color to every column in list view, not just the 'Name' column. You can click the line item under any column and drag to select multiple items.

Unfortunatey, neither XtraFinder or TotalFinder are able to restore color labels to the desktop (yet) but interestingly labels will still appear within icon view in regular folders (they are a bit blocky however). There must be a specific issue that causes the Desktop to react differently.

I always found label colors most useful under list view, so these small limitations are not so bad.

    Hope this helps.

I'm glad you mentioned the version number!  I downloaded the free trial and was SO disappointed to see no difference in the coloring!!  After poking around in its preferences I spotted the option to also download 'beta' versions.  After taking that option (and clicking the color checkbox) I now see my beautiful colors again.

I hadn't missed that aspect but I can see where that could be useful

And my multi-select now works.  Yeah!!  I switch between two computers with a KVM switch -- the other still running ML.  And while I was trying to retrain my fingers to NOT use the multi-select drag behavior on one side of the house my fingers didn't always comply.  And now they don't need any retraining!!!

VERY much so.  I had seen TotalFinder discussed earlier in this thread but I had it confused with Path Finder (which appears to be for a different kind of problem/workflow).  I am so glad you mentioned it again.

Alancito, stop giving people false hope with your offer of a link to Apple, quoted below, there is no one at the end of the line, no one ever replies.

" . . Apple Support Communities exist to address technical issues — to send feedback to Apple about OS X, use this form:

Alan gave you the correct link to send Feedback to Apple, you won't get a reply but it is where you make your opinion known.

    What are you expecting?

Tony ~ Yes there is — Apple states in that form:

    "We read all feedback carefully"

If you were to read Apple's form as carefully as Apple reads your feedback, you would know not to expect a reply:

"please note that we cannot respond to the comments you submit."

This is gonna be one of my last posts, I think, because this board has about expended its usefulness...which has been top notch. Despite the fact that there are about a half-dozen self-appointed monitors or moderators who think that they know the right way to behave here, most people have been doing the right thing, complaining, sharing, and also posting to the Apple feedback link. The "monitors," some of whom get slammed for TOU violations just like the rest of us by the occasional Applebot that sweeps through, claim to know that Apple doesn't come here, but that is quite fatuous. They don't know whether I, or you, aren't from Apple, and of course, if you're from Apple, you are not going to reveal that here.

I'm happy with Xtrafinder, and need go no further, as it does just what I need and runs on top of Finder without apparently interfering in any other way. If Totalfinder does that, more power to it. Good luck to all of you. I await the June unveiling of a Mavericks update, and we will then learn if Apple was listening, sympathetically.

Read quickly, because I will probably be botted for speculation!

    DABbio,

I agree with everything you said.  I too have found satisfaction with Xtrafinder and will uninstal Pathfinder and some of the other downloads I have tried.

Booted or Botted, Thanks for your contributions.

DABbio, every point you've made nails it for me as well, and I'm sure for many others. Over the past 6 months I've found this thread to be cathartic, unnecessarily testy between members at times, yet has served its function amazingly well.

I do have boot-up issues with ExtraFinder since updating to 19.1, yesterday, but it's easily corrected, and so worth the minor inconvenience.

    Thanks for your words!

Works for me, second time I tried it, need to go to Preferences > Appearances > Legacy Label Colour. I havn't selected any other features of XtraFinger. The Colour Labels are linked to Tags; change a Tag and the Colour Label Changes. Thanks Tran Ky Nam

Do you still get it with the latest XtraFinder 0.19.2?
