Apr 23, 2014 12:12 PM in response to Madashelluphereby the_one_and_lonely,As everybody here I do not like too much the exclusion from Mavericks of coloured folders.
It's a mean of visually organize thing "at a glance" that can easily coexist with tags: eg. a blue tag "dot" can be easily noticed on the green background of a folder in Finder. Even a blue dot on a blue background is noticeable, if you add a white contour to the dots.
Hope the guys from Cuper will consider this suggestion ;D

They may if you tell them — here's the place to do so:

It would be nice for my proposal to be endorsed by other users, addressing it to Apple people.

Apr 24, 2014 8:09 AM in response to Madashelluphereby ralphabet,Hi all, the work-around I used to have colored folders is:
- Click on the folder you want to change
- Get info (command-i)
- Click on the small icon in the upper left corner and you will see a blue glow around it. Copy it (command-c)
- Open Photoshop, create new, it will open a new file with the correct dimentions
- Paste (command-v)
- The old blue folder will show up in a new layer
- Change the hue (command-u) to the desired new color (or get fancy and paint something new)
- Select all (command-a)
- Copy (command-c)
- Go back to the folder you want to change with the get info window still open. Make sure the upper left icon is selected, then paste (command-v) the new icon.
Presto - colored folders!
Once you have a colored folder icon you can just copy and paste it into all the folders you want to change. I know it's a few steps but it's the only way I know of.

Apr 24, 2014 8:15 AM in response to ralphabetby the_one_and_lonely,Thank you for the workaround: the problem is that the "coloured folders" in osx 10.8.x and before had the whole line coloured, not only the icon; that is much usefull when you have many instance of Finder open, even if slighty scrolled horizzontally (concealing the icon from view) you can spot easily the folder/file in a bunch of others.

Apr 24, 2014 8:16 AM in response to ralphabetby DABbio,Hi all recent posters. I don't want to be a repeat offender or wet blanket, but it is probably worthwhile to dig back in this discussion board to earlier posts. You would find that alternate solutions now exist, including colored folder icons on the desktop pending the day that Apple restores our beloved capabilities. The following may or may not address the particular complaints most recently posted:
Two applications have emerged that nicely solve the missing colored file/folder labels issue, XtraFinder (free so far) and TotalFinder. ($18 after a 2-week free trial). These apps run on top of the Finder but do not interfere with it, and they do not substitute for the Finder as do some other fixes. I understand that TotalFinder may have some advantages over XtraFinder in terms of file handling, but I would not know about that as I have been perfectly satisfied with Xtrafinder which does not interfere or slow other Mac operations in any way.
So, a fix is available, temporarily or permanently, depending on whether or not Mavericks will be updated to restore label color funtionality.
Meanwhile, many of us have posted to one of the Apple product feedback sites, such as this one,
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.htm
which we encourage you to contribute your thoughts to. We remain hopeful that Apple is listening to us there, and/or here.

Apr 25, 2014 2:57 PM in response to DABbioby hotwheels 22,hi DBBbio, all.
is it possible to get a summary of the XtraFinder and TTF capabilities and if they can be run totally transparently over Finder while retaining labels? i basically lost these when i upgraded my laptop and my desktop is still under ML until i upgrade (screenshot of just the desktop use of labels is below....).
i would like to both start using labels on the desktop as i have in the past but also i would like to wrap my head around if it is OK now to consider buying a new Mac Pro in order to upgrade to Mavericks so i am on the same OS on both computers.
i'd go back and read through these 80+ pages but i dropped out quite awhile ago and i really don't want to spend time trying to solve a problem created by dropping this (for me) mission critical functionality. at the same time if i can just download one piece of software and move along with organizing the laptop and considering a new desktop purchase it would be fantastic.
also, i would be really grateful if there are any power users that can caution against using either of these apps to replace what i am doing as i don't have time to run empirical tests on this issue.
THANKS and regards.

In a nutshell: They're basically the same. Main difference: Does it bother you $18-worth to NOT have the space to the right of a name in List-View be "compromised"? If you don't care, then the free app is probably good enough for your purposes. (& ditto if you don't know what this "compromised space to the right of a name" issue means) If it doesn't pain your workflow then you're good to go with XF. (I felt the pain and spent the $18.)

Apr 25, 2014 3:43 PM in response to hotwheels 22by allenbundy1,Hotwheels,
If the labels were the only issue with Mavericks I might have considered using XtraFinder and TTF. However, the new version of Safari screwed up the way I use bookmarks so badlly and also screwed up Activity command to the point I can't stand using it. There was also a problem with Quicktime in that Perian wouldn't work with it making Quickltime useless. I did find a program called Wondershare Player that works well for video formats.
But until Apple fixes the new version of Safari, or allows me to use Safari 5.1.10 on Mavericks, I'm still using OS 10.6.8 and quite happy with it.

Apr 25, 2014 4:02 PM in response to hotwheels 22by DABbio, hotwheels, I can replicate what you are showing me in your screenshot, more or less, using Xtrafinder. It's "transparent," does not interfere with anything else in Mavericks that I have been able to notice. I do believe that Totalfinder provides some advantages to certain users, but not to me, so I have saved my $18 for the time being.

Apr 25, 2014 5:08 PM in response to keriahby hotwheels 22,hi k. thanks very much for this. do you mind if i just ask you what this issue is? it may help me just download (and buy) one or the other. i mean, just a word or two? i assume this has to do with their being a new item in the column section in list view or coverflow?
THANKS

Apr 25, 2014 5:10 PM in response to DABbioby hotwheels 22,aok. many thanks and also thanks for the reminder that there may be a workaround. i totally abandoned using these on the laptop and if i can get them back i would like to.
P.S. if anyone has any suggestions on software that will give me functionality that /upgrades/ features in Finder or otherwise i would love to hear them (e.g. better search tools, better duplicate removal tools, etc etc). now is sort of a good time for me to get my workflow 2.0 going...
THANKS

Apr 25, 2014 5:28 PM in response to allenbundy1by hotwheels 22,hey ab1. can i ask you what your problem is with bookmarks? i only ask because i had what i thought was some weird issue and someone answered it for me on the boards. i'm not totally sure if there was a tweak in the UI that caused me to think i had something screwed up but i thought to check in case you had the same issue....
