Q: I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

    I'll add my agreement.

Tags are great.  BUT THEY ARE NOT LABELS.  THEY DO NOT FILL THE FUNCTION OF LABELS.  THEY NEED TO BRING BACK LABELS.

So now that you have informed us why don't you inform Apple. After all, we can't change it for you, but they can.

To those of you who have used TotalFinder, do application open/save dialogs show color labels as well?

I can only speak for XtraFinder 0.19.2. The Mavericks style dot appears in the Open/Save dialogues.

Like XtraFinder, TotalFinder does not alter the Mavericks tags/dots in the open/save dialog windows.

I spoke to the developer of TotalFinder, and he explained that adding labels to the open/save dialogs is a much more difficult task because those windows are part of the system frameworks, not the Finder itself.

Changing the behavior there would alter the behavior of all apps, potentially breaking them if something goes wrong. It is not something entirely ruled out for the future, but based on his feedback I would not expect to see labels returned to those windows anytime soon.

I have read a good portion of the comments and agree. Everyone needs to make a strong suggestion to Apple. http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

I've been around long enough to see add-ons serve as a tremendous value to everyday users but labels (colored rows) is just so core it can not be but Apple to fix it.

Apple is one of the few companies who will correct things, at least the Apple I've grown up with. Having not foreseen the fail that is Tags with tiny colored bullets it does not look good for us worker types.

jlitherland, I've offered feedback about the useless tags functionality many times.  I've begged many times to ditch the colors and kill the auto-complete lunacy but all to no avail.  Tags produce nothing but useless gibberish that slow me down to a snail's pace and make it impossible to maintain or use a once-highly-serviceable file system.  That's not the goal of technology; once upon a time, Apple knew that.

The Apple you grew up with no longer exists.  I've owned only Apple computers since 1993 and I am truly shocked at what a mess Mavericks has made of the company.

I do terribly miss tags that function.  Over the years, I've built a very effective file system based on tags and Apple's totally destroyed it all with Mavericks.  There's absolutely nothing "free" about an "upgrade" like that, no matter what a slick ad department tries to claim.

If you don't like 10.9 go back to an earlier version. This is not a complicated choice.

Nor is it viable, Csound1.  Your obviously uninformed response doesn't address the question.  Please don't respond if you have no functional information to offer.  Focus on the question.  ONLY on the question.

Then use a 3rd party utility, rolling back is simple, your unwillingness to roll back to a system that does what you want is your choice.

Have you sent any feedback to Apple yet, or just here?

Agree with you, HappyTexas. Try not to let the small group of self-appointed monitors on this board bother you with their imperious advisories. Most of the rest of us--apparently not including me--have by now learned to ignore them and not to stir up the mosquito nest.

For recent visitors, a polite contribution would note that two applications have emerged that nicely solve the missing colored file/folder labels issue, XtraFinder (free so far) and TotalFinder. ($18 after a 2-week free trial). These apps run on top of the Finder but do not interfere with it, and they do not substitute for the Finder as do some other fixes. I understand that TotalFinder may have some advantages over XtraFinder in terms of file handling, but I would not know about that as I have been perfectly satisfied with Xtrafinder which does not interfere or slow other Mac operations in any way.

So, a fix is available, temporarily or permanently, depending on whether or not Mavericks will be updated to restore label color funtionality.

Meanwhile, many of us have posted to one of the Apple product feedback sites, such as this one,

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.htm

which we encourage you to contribute your thoughts to. We remain hopeful that Apple is listening to us there, and/or here.

Thank you, DABbio, for being the voice of sanity in this sea of lunacy.

I won't be using third-party software to save my Apple files.  It's the reliance on third-party products that makes Microsoft such a bothersome system (although, since Mavericks, Microsoft is looking a lot more attractive than ever).

I also won't use third-party applications because I've paid Apple in full for the products they advertise.  I expect Apple to keep up its end of the agreement by delivering the products I've bought based on the advertising they do.  Anything less than 100% delivery of products advertised and purchased would be the crime of fraudulent advertising and I expect better from Apple.

I won't be using third-party software to save my Apple files because saving is such a simple process, perfected decades ago, and Apple needs to use it.  This madness of colors and auto-generated gibberish is shameful.  The technology to save and tag files for easy identification was perfected ages ago.  Apple knows that.  Apple's used and sold it for decades.  They need to call quits to this game and get back to respectable business.

I won't be using the third-pary applications the trolls on these forums push in lieu of useful commentary.  Their insistence that their way is the only way only leads me to believe firmly that they are expecting to cash in on my use of  their probably faulty products.  It's especially suspicious when they keep insisting their products are the only thing to do while they ignore completely the original question.

I won't be exposing my computer files as screenshots to the trolls on these forums.  I value the privacy and integrity of my personal property and won't be posting it for public access here or anywhere.

As for submitting Apple feedback, I always do that long before subjecting myself to these silly, self-serving forums.  I've never been a fan of forums but I do maintain a glimmer of hope someone at Apple will see the needs of the people who fund their paychecks and respond accordingly.  Before Mavericks, I never had need of submitting feedback or resorting to the very last chance of these almost-always useless forums.  Yes, the glimmer continues but it is fading fast.

I refuse to believe all Apple sanity died when Steve Jobs did.

Please name one advertised feature that Apple failed to deliver in Mavericks.

    Just one.

I have to say that for once I agree. Mavericks is a superior operating system to anything I personally have found for the personal computer. (Uh-oh, drum roll, cue the Unix crowd, et al.) Even the tags feature, vilified here because it seems to have placed colored labels in the shade, pardon the pun, is probably very useful to a large group of power users who need to do lots of sorting, who naturally we won't hear complaining, at least not here. We should not disparage other user groups' preferences. There is always opportunity for improvement.

What is there in Mavericks that you must have?

Back to the question:  Does anybody KNOW how TURN OFF the auto-complete feature for tags to saved files in Mavericks?

    Thank you.
