May 23, 2014 11:10 AM in response to HappyTexasby Infinimac,Why are you on this thread, then? It clearly has nothing to do with you or your concerns. Please go to the thread that's all about "I love the tiny little dot that I don't care about because it's so insiginficant it doesn't affect the fact that I don't care about it."
But if you insist on tro77ing, how would you like one of your beloved and highly relied-upon features to "be disappeared" without warning and no options? Maybe nested folders, for example?
The rest of us, who used colored labels as key organizational tools for years with the trusting undestanding that it would not become "optional" in Mavericks or any other future OS, are trying to send a message to Apple. "What else can't we trust you to 'let' us keep over time?" "What else will be done to destroy our trust that you 'care' about your loyal customers?"
I didn't upgrade to Mavericks until April 2014 and I set aside three full work days to do it because Apple has crossed to the dark side. I reviewed dozens of sites, from CNET on, to figure out what the consequences might be. There was a terrific site that listed hundreds of apps and how compatible they would be with last three OS upgrades. I spent hours and hours doing my homework. I went to forums. But I could not afford to go to ALL of them. I missed this one. Apple did not post a list of features we would lose.
As a businesswoman who does her own IT until I can afford to hire someone, this was a huge overhead cost. I get to pass it along to my clients. They get to pass it along to their customers. Those customers are potential Apple customers. There is a circle here that Apple would do well to heed.

May 23, 2014 11:29 AM in response to Madashelluphereby Infinimac,Submitted feedback to Apple on this.
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx_thankyou.html
Please, everyone, keep it up.
"Please bring back the option to use full color labels to organize files. There are 88 pages on a relevant Apple forum asking for this. For many of us, including color-blind and visually impaired people (I'm not), cues like full lines of colored folders were critical in helping us stay organized, be efficinet, and get immediate access to files. The little dots may help "sort" by colored label, but they are nearly worthless otherwise, too far from the file name, too small.
As an Apple user since Lisa, with three MacBook Pros and a Quadra and Duo that still work, and a BUNCH of other Apple products, I am a loyal & committed Apple customer. But this is destroying my trust. What else will Apple simply yank away in the next upgrade? (Not to mention the Gmail vs Mavericks war.) Help!"

May 23, 2014 11:34 AM in response to Infinimacby jesushcrisco,I could not agree more. It's a small thing- tags- but it's so representative of everything Apple does these days:
"Hey, you love this product? Cool. We're going to eviscerate everything useful about it."

May 23, 2014 2:02 PM in response to Infinimacby petermac87,Reinstall the backup you made before you chose to install
Mavericks or download XtraFinder until Apple ever decides to bring back the old labels. All you can do meanwhile is keep sending feedback.

May 24, 2014 7:16 AM in response to petermac87by lazorik,The point is that Mavericks disables color labels. How do we get Apple to understand that? I call it a vicious thing to do to its life long customers. Apple people cannot or will not answer a simple question, why? If you don’t believe call Apple at 1 800 692 7753

Ever notice how threads like this eventually degenerate into nonsense? Sensible discussion turns into ranting and raving, name calling begins, and then the slightly 'off' crowd shows up. Happens all the time. There should be some term for this, similar to Godwin's Law. Godwin's Law states,
"As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."

There is always a change with new OS's
Maybe Labels will come back (like "Save As"), and maybe they won't (like iDVD)

May 24, 2014 8:22 AM in response to lkruppby DABbio, lkrupp, you are correct about that, except that the "off" crowd seems to have been here from the get-go. To make up for the infantile improprieties, I will occasionallyl reprint the following post for late-comers, which I think still summarizes the situation.
Briefly, friends, at least two solutions exist for the missing colored file/folder label problem, XtraFinder (free so far) and TotalFinder. ($18 after a 2-week free trial). These apps run on top of the Finder but do not interfere with it, and they do not substitute for the Finder as do some other fixes. I understand that TotalFinder may have some advantages over XtraFinder in terms of file handling, but I would not know about that as I have been perfectly satisfied with Xtrafinder which does not interfere or slow other Mac operations in any way.
For those who think this is difficult, I am a permanent computer newbie, yet I downloaded and installed Xtrafinder in a few minutes, and have had it operating pretty much flawlessly ever since. Yes, there is one slightly awkward implementation of folder icon coloring-- on the desktop only. There are some people who seek additional refinements or have special problems which I honestly think most of the rest of us will not be bothered about.
So, a fix is available, temporarily or permanently, depending on whether or not Mavericks will be updated to restore label color funtionality.
Meanwhile, many of us have posted to one of the Apple product feedback sites, such as this one,
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.htm
which we encourage you to contribute your thoughts to. We remain hopeful that Apple is listening to us there, and/or here.
