How wonderfully competent of you. Marvellous. Now learn some manners. I am not defending Apple here, I am commenting on the lack of action by third parties to get up to speed. And who is 'the enemy' I have joined?
Read the Terms Of Use as you should have done when firstly agreeing to them when joining these forums.
Also thanks for your incredibly in depth input to the issue.
Cheers

Oct 6, 2015 4:41 PM in response to petermac87by fiddledeedee,The developers of XtraFinder and Total Finder updated their apps to work in beta El Capitan. SIP, which was first released with full El Capitan, is a different animal, as Pier11 wrote. It foiled the developers' efforts, to their frustration and that of everyone else, such as myself, who depended on their apps for a highly useful feature that Apple had so cavalierly dropped. Apple, apparently, hadn't bothered to find out how such a change would actually, in the reality that exists beyond Cupertino, impact real users.
I am not at all saying that Apple should not explore new ideas. At times, though, it seems that they sacrifice function for form, or for pet ideas. Often they offer the barest of functionality, such as in Finder or Pages, when they could provide so much more. The many third party apps that extend the functionality of Apple apps attest to that.
As for the "Save As" function, Apple finally caved in after public outrage; it has been years, though, since you've had to hold down the opt key to get it. If that's what you're still doing, Pete, go here http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/27/enable-save-as-os-x-mountain-lion/

Oct 6, 2015 6:08 PM in response to fiddledeedeeby petermac87,New ideas? This thread is two years old. The main market for Mac these days would never have seen these old features, and therefore will never miss them. I notice you give an old link for enabling Save As in Mountain Lion, but no links as to the rest of your claims. If enough users had complained about the loss of coloured folders as they did with the loss of Save As then perhaps we would have seen a return. We have not.

Oct 12, 2015 11:40 AM in response to petermac87by Shaun Ferguson,Here's an interesting fact - a friend of mine has just updated his MacBook 17" Pro from Snow Leopard to El Capitan.
And for some strange reason he still has all his labels working ...

I know. Yet your's are just so chock full of wonderfully technical alternative ideas. But you still can't get a grip on the basics. It is fun watching you try to keep an old dead thread alive and failing so miserably at it. By the way, have you mentioned to Apple Feedback how you cannot cope with Mavericks still, let alone any of the more recent OSXs that have broken all downloading records? Real deal breaker, huh?

Oct 12, 2015 1:10 PM in response to petermac87by fiddledeedee,You prove my point, Petey. Most of your posts on this 2-years-long, 216,693-hits thread are nasty and sarcastic and, hence, not useful. I will no longer respond to anything you write.

Oct 23, 2015 2:53 AM in response to Madashelluphereby rodgeart,There doesn't seem to be a way to change the tags, but if you really need clear marking on your folders, heres a way to do it (you need photoshop).
Open a new folder. Create a square photoshop canvas (5cm x 5cm @ 72 dpi will do) Use the bucket to drop whatever colour you want into it.
select all and copy. Click on the new folder you created so it highlights. Go to File - Get info. A tab will open for your folder. On the top left is an image of a folder. Click on it so it's highlighted. Paste. The folder will now become an image of your coloured square. You can then do this to all your important folders.
You can even Type something into the square (one or two letters are about right) and that will copy across to your folder. It uses up a little more ram on your computer but for ease of finding what you were looking for, it's worth it.

Oct 23, 2015 5:24 AM in response to Madashelluphereby WZZZ,This is a very long thread, so no idea if this has been recommended already. This will allow you to restore the pre-10.9/Mav folder labels. It also includes a number of other features.

Oct 23, 2015 9:07 PM in response to WZZZby fiddledeedee,I used XtraFinder for a couple of years. TotalFinder is another app that adds labels. Neither is compatible with El Capitan, though, and probably won't be. The problem lies with Apple's new System Integrity Protection (SIP). TotalFinder's developer explains here http://totalfinder.binaryage.com/system-integrity-protection.

Well, I'd rather have security than coloured folders.

Nov 17, 2015 11:01 PM in response to Madashelluphereby Remember Paper,The easiest thing to do is,
• Click on the folder
• right click and "get info"
• click on the blue folder icon on the top
• in the edit drop down menu, click copy
• open preview and in the file drop down menu, click "new from clipboard"
• click on the folder thumbnail at the top of the preview document
• in the edit drop down menu, choose adjust color
• adjust the sliders to make your preferred color
• select all thumbnails in the preview window and copy
• go back into the "get info" menu of the folder
• click on the folder icon at the top again and past.
• voilà
