Q: I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

Yeah, I realize that, but since this forum exists, and most people in this thread *are* complaining about its demise, I have forwarded the URL to Apple via their feedback form.

I'm not reverting to Mountain Lion, Apple wouldn't want me to, that's backwards thinking and I wasn't on ML anyways, I was on Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Will give Pathfinder a look, but Apple should still see the error of their ways.

    Thanks.

And they might, but don't expect it before year-end (if ever)

Just finished 3 hours sorting through a myriad of files, updates and very similar naming conventions and I SO MISS the label colors in LIST view... I have a migrane now after trying to keep the file names separated... the tag dots are useless for visual display organization.

I'll qualify my post to say that I've been a loyal and steady Mac user since 1985.

Please leave feedback about this for Apple. It is the only sure way of making sure your opinion is known to Apple.

Here is a link to give feedback:

I sent feedback on this on day 2 of the update. It seems that most of us on the forum are aware of the official bug reporting links by now, thanks.

    Hello again!

Thought I'd update everybody on this subject.

I have now reinstalled Mountain Lion from a Time Machine back-up drive. It is lovely to see the brilliant colour labels again. Honest,Mountain Lion is an UPGRADE from Mavericks.

Apart from the labels,I hated Mavericks' inability to open a new Finder window by double clicking a folder (all 'normal' again with ML). I hated Spotlight's tag/meta data indexing. I hated the Finder crashing. I hated the dock disappearing. I hated the failed restarts. I hated everything about Mavericks.

If you have a ML back-up,reinstall it. Don't hang around for Apple to do anything,if they bother to do anything, that is. Don't bother with Path Finder. Save your money. Reinstall ML......now!

No need to do that. Get Path Finder.

VascoFG sed... No need to do that. Get Path Finder.

Nah... PathFinder is an app that rides above the Finder, don't want this, thanks. That harkens back to the dark days of pre-System X where you could dump all kinds of crap on the OS to improve it, and Apple gradually bought up these "improvements" and made them their own. Installing PathFinder is a massive leap backwards in this regard. I just want Labels, nothing else.

Apple will come around to the error in their ways, it's not like Labels is the only issue with Mavericks, it is riddled with errors...

    - Labels need to be reinstated, keep Tags for whoever wants them, but Labels needs to return

    - No more spring-loaded folders - this is simply unacceptable interface stupidity, needs to be fixed

    - Icons on desktop moving around when files resaved [no previous version of the OS ever did this]

    - Safari not returning to the previous folder when adding attachments, it goes back to Documents which is annoying as ****, not since sometime back in System 6 has this been a problem, 15+ years ago!!

    - Search does not immediately show the located item path, at least doesn't show when finding a folder, in fact the whole search thing is completed fracked up, I want to seach a specific item immeidately, not start with searching every single file on the entire hard drive for a text-string, I hardly ever do this, I am usually always searching for a filename, need to toggle into this immediately, not fish around for it

While Mavericks is slick and fast, although a complete system wipe and 10.6 ot .7 resintall might have done the same thing for my iMac, there are too many annoying little things going on, need to be addressed and need to be fixed with the next update immediately. Have been sending feedback to Apple on each of these items over the past week since updating. So while I realize posting in here likely won't do anything with Apple... at least having more of us aware of these glaring issues will push Apple in the right direction.

    Thanks.

    Hi everybody,

A solution might be to give your folders or files custom icons. It won't add color to a whole line in list view, but is a little better than just a dot.

I do not want to custom colour my folders.

I do not want to give my folders custom icons.

All I want is to be able to use labels again.

Apple will come around to the error in their ways, it's not like Labels is the only issue with Mavericks

I don't think Apple will replace tags/dots with Labels/BG Colour simply because you cannot have multiple line colours and you can have multiple dots (multiple tags), which is necessary to their new search system and the way the OS outputs those requests. Even though i miss it much and would prefer the simpler labeling line colouring system (around which I organised my workflow) I don't believe Apple will go back to it, unless they figure a way to have informative gradients on there .

That's why I suggested PF as an alternative, notwithstanding the fact that you are absolutely right and piling up 3rd pary softs in your machine to do things that SHOULD be there in the first place isn't right. My suggestion to Apple (yes, I'll use that feedback link thx, no need to post again, ahah) would be to allow the user to choose between Labels and Tags or have BOTH but then you'd need shorter labels (the size of the filename not the finder columns) and the multiple dot system on the right

Anyway, you probably can fix this with some unix tricks—people just haven't directed their full wits to tweak 10.9 yet...

This said, I'd much prefer Labels if only 1 choice was given. Just like the active selection background on the folders/files which is too big now (even though you can see why they went for bigger bg's). Lion's was better looking.
