Nov 10, 2013 6:57 PM in response to Zaapby Laralyn10,excellent point I'm off to the land of nodd though. Be nice to each other.

Path Finder is a good solution for me on my HOME computers, but it's not an automatic solution at work where the studio has plans to do an across the board upgrade to Mavericks to bring all the computers in line with the same OS version. I pretty much have no say over that. In my case, I can request and pretty much get Path Finder at work as well, but let's don't pretend everyone will have the same option.
I really don't understand repeating the same "Just downgrade, just install PF, just don't complain, just bring up some other software" over and over again as being somehow less repetitive to this discussion, than just discussing the color labels issue. But whatever.

The repeating of " Just downgrade, just install PF" is the response to the constant "bring back Labels, now" repetitiveness.
Delete the repeats, and this 20 page thread would get knocked down to 5 (about the last page that any discussion ended).
The facts are clear, the solutions (as they stand now) are clear.
What more is there to discuss?

Nov 10, 2013 7:06 PM in response to Tony T1by bikinijack,TonyT1: And what about those almost 11,000 views of this thread? How much will that get knocked down? There is an issue here, and I am sure Apple will address it.

And yes, Apple may bring back Labels (but this thread will not be the cause)

I'm currently between projects and on holiday.. which means I can SEE that my work project folders are messed up, but why would I start my free 30 day PF trial when I don't need it yet, and I want it to last as long as possible so that it might cover me till a more affordable solution is found?
I also have some trepidation about replacing the finder. PF runs on top of the finder afaik.. I just think that's a bit radical. But I'll try it when the time comes.
I totally hear you Laralyn, sounds like you're going through pretty much what I was after upgrading.
One thing, if it does come down to using PathFinder, I will say that I've been nothing but thrilled with it. (And no, I'm not afiliated with them in any way!) haven't found to be intrusive, or resource-heavy or in any way noticeable other than now my computer functions the way I want it to. Running on top of Finder, I haven't found that to be in any way a downside.
I also wrote to the makers of TotalFinder asking if they had plans to implement color labels and the dev got back to me saying they were thinking about it, as they've had a lot of requests. Hopefully others here will write them or post on their forums as well and help sway their descision.
Like most, I'd like to see Apple bring back color labels, but just incase, I think PF is a pretty adequate solution, but also as said, NOT the one-size-fits-all solution for everyone.

We don't know why, but PF is not a workable solution for Laralyn10

Repetition is not discussion.

Nov 10, 2013 7:17 PM in response to Madashelluphereby Tracy E,Potential Temporary Solution:
There is a third-party preference pane from blacktree.com called Secrets. It calls itself "A database of hidden settings for Mac OS X." It doesn't appear to have been updated in quite a while, but it still works
Don't get too excited yet. It doesn't turn on the label functionality, but it possibly could. Here's how:
1. The source code is readily available. If someone who knows how to do such things could grab it, they could probably adapt it to add the feature.
2. The label functionality is still in Mavericks. It has just been turned of. It is almost completely hidden, but some older programs still show it. I previously posted a screen grab (see below) of the QuickTime 7 Export dialogue that shows the ability to display labels is still in Mavericks.
If QuickTime 7 can show labels in Mavericks, I bet that some enterprising programmer can make it happen system wide. And Secrets may be the keys to making it happen. Anyone up for the challenge?

Thank you.

Nov 10, 2013 7:19 PM in response to Tracy Eby Jumberbunch,It's not just old programs that show the original Label functionality. I use modo for my 3D work and that shows the same behaviour.

Shhhhh..... If Apple is listening, they may fix that
