Q: I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

Dabio, it is already like that. If you change a tag, it makes the same change as a label even though in Finder, label is not enabled. But in Pathfinder, Forklift etc, you can see the change there and visa versa, same color, file, everything. We just need a command to re-enable the labels part of this if that is at all possible.

    Helpful reply, grdh20.

BTW, if and when Apple re-instates labels, wouldn't it be a good idea to have the label extend among files and aliases?

I could not agree more. Labels are for quick visual sorting. Tags are . . . are . . . for something else. Why take away the good, basic functionality of quick visual sorting for . . . whatever? What can't Mavericks have its Labels and its Tags, too? If we can land a man on the moon, can't Apple . . . keep our Labels? Sheesh!

Wow, lclcv , everything you said I concur with. I, too, had a visually impactful system of color-assigned rules—years in making—that was capriciously wiped away with Mavericks. Had I known, I'd have most definitely refrained from "upgrading." If anything, I wish the labeling/tagging system were MORE blatant: flashing for critical working files; anything eye-catching, because, hey, a wall of files to be sorted through/organized for 8-12 hours p/day is exhausting.

Third party programs are already begging to emerge. Just be careful and concentrate on the ones from respected software developers. There will be some 'backyard jobs' that will come out and more than likely pose a threat of damage to the OSX itself, as many have in the past.

    Cheers

Nice to see some new names appearing here. It is a shame I cannot live up to my ID and be a real Wizard,to cast a Magic Spell over Mavericks,to bring back what has been taken away.

My workaround to this frustration has been to use custom icons for my folders.  Find an icon online . . . lots of free options . . . and then copy and paste it into the icon field (top left corner) of the information pane (command + i) of your folder.  You can also use .png files you find at images.google.com.  Not a cure-all, but an option that works for quick ID-ing of folders and documents.  It's fun, too!

Rick, yes I have also taken to bright colored folder icons (using an app called folder brander) that also allows text of any size on the colored icons and this will have to do for now.

I would imagine that a tweak style option to turn either tags or labels into choice (or even have both) would be fairly simple for someone who knows what they are doing under the hood. Remember, the function from my experiments seems to be identical and crosses over. You make a tag in finder and a label in Pathfinder appears with that same color. You make a label in Pathfinder and tag in finder appears with that same color.  The olny difference I suppose would be what happens wioth mutiple tag colors.

Apple you need to bring back the coloured folders!!!!! it was the single best way there has ever been for organising folders and making them easy to find! I will not be downloading Mavrick on any other system until this massive floor is fixed! I have yet to hear any rational arguement (or any arguement at all) as to why this horrendous mistake has been made. Why would you introduce a system that completely messes up everyones existing organisation methods and not have an option to keep the original way it was!!! absolute madness! Soooooooo distapointed!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been making customized icons for years, but it's not nearly enought visual "grab" when staring at a wall of files. It's the next step after looking at strongly presented color coding.

An anomaly, and further aggrivation, is I've noticed even the little red tag dots go away on my aliases after the file has been opened and closed.

Perhaps you mean "coloured labels"? ...Folders can still be coloured by following the instructions in the section Changing an item's icon here:

Mac Basics: About icons in OS X

Anyway, Apple isn't here — we're all just users like yourself. As has been mentioned many times already in this thread, to send feedback to Apple about OS X, use this form:

This is just a tip: Before posting here in ASC, try clicking on this Spellchecker icon:

Spelling mistakes such as "arguement" instead of "argument" will be underlined in red. But, unfortunately, Spellchecker can't alert you to an incorrect use of a word such as "floor" instead of "flaw".

    Hi,

Does the new version of XtraFinder (version 0.18.1)  have any effect on coloured labels  in Mavericks? i'm using  Mountain Lion,so maybe someone could test XtraFinder.

Just give me back the old label functionality.

I have no use for this little dots. Dots is not a label... it's just a dot.

People with astigmatism have huge problems with this very unnecessary additional feature. Apple has not really changed the labeling but removed it and added something else.

How did you guys miss this App?

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5502306#23881621

"another finder app that still handles this perfect ... its called " Forklift "

Forklift has also another really handy feature ... it can merge folders :-)

Ill probably buy that app ... it brings me back to where it left me after ML ... but dont forget that Maverick also brought good things ..."

Nope. Forklift is an FTP client. NOT a finder replacement/tweak
