Jan 7, 2014 9:19 PM in response to hotwheels 22by Barney-15E,I don't think you're supposed to see them. It's really designed to select a tag and show the files that have that tag.
Or, arrange by tags to group similarly tagged files.

Jan 8, 2014 9:43 PM in response to Barney-15Eby hotwheels 22,hi barney. ooof. yeah. ok, i get it. well i guess they decided to totally trash any ability to visually navigate my files in the new OS. this is a shame. from reading the ars technica article posted it sounds like they did this as a matter of /convenience/ and that hijacking the existing implementation of the visual identifying colors and replacing this with tags was sort of a lowest common denominator hybrid approach. on the one hand they didn't have to implement a true search tool based on robust tag sort and on the other they were able to "port" peoples' existing color tagging system.
this seems like totally flawed logic (at least from a user's workflow) since i used the previous implementation to VISUALLY identify files and folders for ease of use and that coding the new tag system over this simply does away with the original reason i colored these folders.
like Siracusa i am finding this approach severely lacking and i find myself wishing they had taken the time to implement a more robust system. i mean, after researching this i believe i am going to use a third party tool to tag my files and folders anyway so all this new implementation has done is to do away with my ability to visual manage my files which i really did (and still) rely on (at least on the desktop that hasn't been upgraded).
BTW, i just took all the tags /off/ of my files on the desktop of my laptop machine since all having these files and folders "tagged" did was to put a colored dot in /front/ of the file name and totally throw off the text from the other files' text so that it all became almost impossible to actually see what was one my desktop. this means that tag sort will only apply to files and folders not on my desktop which only obscures my ability to find and manage my files even further...

Jan 10, 2014 9:27 AM in response to Madashelluphereby llouk,I totally hate the new tags instead of the old labels too. It's very confusing.
while I was reading this thread, I gave up looking for a solution.
Coincidentally I was installing a file managment application called Forklift.
first time I opened the application, I was very suprised (and happy) to see that this folder still uses the old labels instead of tags!!! the program looks quite the same as the default finder application as well.
Of course this is not a complete sollution, but for those who desperately need their labels back (like me) it might be a workaround.

Jan 10, 2014 4:45 PM in response to lloukby kriss13,This was plain stupid.
Labels not clearly visible are NOT labels.
Might as well remove them all toghethre since their main purpose is lost... to EASLY find stuff in front of you.

Jan 10, 2014 5:21 PM in response to lloukby DABbio,Thanks for this. I believe that Forklift was mentioned long ago/above. It seemed like a lot of weight to carry just to get labels back and was oriented to people who do lots of heavy lifting with files. See also the discussions about Pathfinder. I wonder what your and others experience with Forklift is. Do we lose any of the functionality of Mavericks, or does this thing ride on top or separate from Mavericks?

Jan 10, 2014 5:21 PM in response to kriss13by petermac87,I much prefer the tags to labels. Much easier in my opinion.
Cheers

Jan 11, 2014 1:36 PM in response to lloukby hotwheels 22,hi llouk.
thanks for this reference to forklift. i am looking at yojimbo in order to organize a large number of incoming resumes and forkilft looks like a very interesting piece of software. just the ability to use quicklook on external volumes would be a huge help.
if you do get a chance - and are inclined to repost - i would be interested in what you are using it for and how you find it may help your workflow/productivity.
thanks.

Jan 11, 2014 2:02 PM in response to petermac87by hotwheels 22,hi all,
in addition to looking for something to replicate the old ability of tags to help me visually recognize and locate files on my HD - i am looking to purchase third party softare that provides more robust sort/tag/organizational capabilities than the mavericks implementation of tags. after doing a good deal of research i am finding that the current implementation of the new tag functionality will not meet my needs.
right now i am planning on going with yojimbo for this need (to organize incoming resumes and portfolios) and i also see a recommendation for forklift for which i will be looking closely at. both of these look like excellent adds to an already great Mac OS.
if anyone has any additional suggestions for these functionalities and/or if they have user experience they can offer for organizing something like a thousand or more files that require tagging and sorting i would love to hear about it. also, any suggestions on getting my visual sort/recognition back would be welcome as well.
THANKS IN ADVANCE

Jan 11, 2014 3:34 PM in response to Madashelluphereby Wizard_Magic_Spell,Probably already mentioned within this thread, but, the developer behind Total Finder made the following comment last November, regarding colour labels......
Hi guys, I'm considering implementing this feature. But first I have to fix all quirks under Mavericks.

Jan 13, 2014 4:05 AM in response to Wizard_Magic_Spellby ulisesagain,Thanks for the news. It would be great to return to the pre-Mavericks coloring system (without losing the filtering system by tags used by Mavericks). At least Apple should give the user the choice between the two systems. Those of us who made intensive use of tags to color and distinguish our files really miss this feature.
-
Jan 13, 2014 1:56 PM in response to ulisesagainby Grrregerrr,That says it all quite succinctly with civility, ulisesagain; the quintessential response for this entire "I hate the new tags..." thread. The Total Finder developer's comment by Wizard_Magic_Spellis comforting and all I really need to hear. Surely, the singular thing that has fueled the ire in this thread was that initial shock of the [coloring system] omission we all had when booting Mavericks for the first time (the VERY first function I did was search all over for the "turn on" button)… then, being incensed that no one may care. This thread has been both cathartic and educational for me. For one thing, it was fascinating to read how many of you out there used similar systematic approaches as I.

Jan 13, 2014 3:48 PM in response to Grrregerrrby hotwheels 22,yeah. a couple things from my end though.
1. it would be nice to know if there is anything that one should do or should not do to an existing system with robust tags in the event there is a new implementation that would allow you to incorporate them into your workflow. for some of us the idea of redoing tags would be a nightmare since it is how we have ordered items to take care of (for instance) and these are splayed throughout a 2 tb HD. i wouldn't want to have to redo this by memory if i did something silly that caused them not to 'port'.
2. i notice he specifically said "i'm considering implementing...". i am not so sure that i would take this to the bank and from the sounds of the deliberate bug/error tracking he may need to do for mavericks - well i am not sure i am as optimistic about this until there is an announcement of some kind. maybe there is a mailing list we can sign up for to be alerted if this gets implemented for sure or if there is a timetable assigned to it?
3. i know i missed a lot here but was there a /summary/ of other options to get back this utility or is this possible implementation the only option at this point?
thanks

Jan 15, 2014 7:44 AM in response to Grrregerrrby Peohguy, then, being incensed that no one may care. This thread has been both cathartic and educational for me. For one thing, it was fascinating to read how many of you out there used similar systematic approaches as I.
In response to the above, not trying to be a S A , but a lot of humans do think alike. Either the Mavericks developers forgot this or they had the temerity to believe they had the beter idea and everyone would jump on their band wagon.
Another comment regarding tags and colored dots. Is it just my computer display set up, but is that all of the color intensity that I can expect from tags color dots and is that the same color intensity that was available when colored folders w
ere an option? I would have hoped for a greater richness. Just a few of my thoughts and comments.

Jan 16, 2014 11:43 AM in response to Jumberbunchby tweberfree,All these are good ideas but for me the biggest problem (besides not being able to color folders) is that I now have a zillion uncolored files... can you imagine how long it would take to re-sort and recolor all these things... AGGGGGGHHHHHHhhhhhh! And yes, I complained to Apple. Here is the link for anyone else who wants to protest: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
