Q: I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

    thanks for the link again. i think i posted when this first happened but now i did so in a slightly more modulated way.

    in describing the fact that label and tags serve two different functions at the end i said (off the top of my head) that giving me tags in place of labels was like upgrading my drive train but taking away my tires. lol...

    Thanks, tweberfree, for reminding me why buying 3rd party software to reproduce what we had taken for granted, and daily incorporated, line-by-line (color-assigning a "zillion files")—over the course of years—is off the table for discussion.

    I did get a little plug-in that brought my icons back (it was shareware so I sent him a donation). I still don't have colored folders but now I have my icons. They popped right back up and in living color.

    To some people it might seem silly to have icons for folders, but even with just the icons in color and showing on my sidebar, it is easer to find things quickly (plus it's much less boring! :-) And I didn't have to do anything manually. My old icons just came back "alive". The software is called SideEffects and is written by Simon Barnett. I'd post the link but I don't think apple allows it. Good luck folks!!

    Yes, it's been around since Lion. Some find it quite useful. Nothing to do with coloured labels or tags though. Just sidebar icons.

    Numbers of posts here are irrelevant. It is the numbers in the proper feedback channels that count. Try there. The official link has been posted many times. There are far bigger and longer threads that have never produced reinstallation of the feature by Ape, and yet massive feedback that has returned the odd feature. So try their feedback site. The more the merrier.

    Good luck

    OK. Here is A SOLUTION

    ================================================================================ =

    Simply put, I bought a new 1TB drive. Installed Mountain Lion. Using the Migration Assistant tool (after the Mountain Lion install, not during), imported everything from the Mavricks drive.

    ================================================================================ =

    This worked on my Mac Pro. Discussing the issue with my company's IT tech, he indicates that it could (possibly) work for Macbooks by removing the existing Mavricks drive, installing the new drive and installing Mountian Lion, then connecting the Mavericks drive to the computer and migrating the content into the new drive.

    I did encounter some issues with permissions and a short bout with a login loop, but I don't know if those issues were related to the new drive and migration.

    But whatever the cause, I DO now have my old Mountain Lion drive back with all my lovely COLORED LABELS.

    That is not a solution to coloured labels being returned to Mavericks. That is simply returning to your previous system setup which has been mentioned a hundred or more times in these forums. Not a solution to the Mavericks problem at all.

    "Numbers of posts here are irrelevant. It is the numbers in the proper feedback channels that count."

    Actually, the number of posts here are probably relevant. If the people posting here ALSO posted to Apple's Feedback site (thanks to the constantant reminders to the site link), then I would imagine that they have received AT LEAST that number, and probably many more (many who go directly to that feedback link probably never even saw this site, or were among the 42707 who only viewed these posts).

    You are doing a lot of 'assuming'. Complaints here are barely a drop in the ocean when compared to the many many millions of Mavericks users in the world. If you can't backup your guesstimates then you really shouldn't post them.

    Probably is also not a technical term.

    Doesn't matter.

    MANY people here are looking for a way to get back Mountain Lion and are more than willing to totally abandon Mavericks.

    If Apple eventually corrects the loss of Lables on Mavericks, those people will more than likely go back. But for those who have been lamenting installing Mavericks now have the ability to at least go back to Mountain Lion.

    While there have been questiona about returning to Mountain Lion from Mavericks, there was no way provided to undo the Mavericks install. No one had ever provided this solution.

    Whatever the position, those who want to get back to Mountain Lion can. And that's the important thing.

    Sure I am. so are you and everyone else. Your assumption about the "drop in the ocean" can't very well be backed up as far as I can see.

    For the most part, I'm willing to just let people here have their rants. That is kind of what this entire thread is about.

    Doug, thank you so much! I'm going to do exactly as you've suggested. In fact, it's the most helpful solution (yes, solution) I've read so far. Having unwittingly upgraded to Mavericks 2 months ago without knowing anything about the Tag overwriting, I was hesitant to risk endangering 2 months of cumulative work. I will return to Mavericks as soon as (or, if) the coloring system is returned. Pete, I've appreciated many of your expert points on this thread and have learned a lot from you—you're highly informed and articulate—yet your response and tone toward Doug's suggestion sounds hostile, and that puzzles me.

    No I am simply pointing out that it is not a solution to returning coloured labels to Mavericks. It does nothing to solve the issue for a few people here that want coloured labels in Mavericks. Of course they were in Mountain lion, we all know that. As I said, many many millions are using Mavericks without issue. It can be easily googled. Reverting to ML does nothing to solve the issue in Mavericks.

    Cheers

    Being offered a definitive date for when a true solution can be counted upon would do it for me, but I've not read any such claim. Every time a new posting alert for this thread pops up, I get hopeful an announcement will finally be given about a true solution. The most I've garnered from this thread is 1) many users like me were stunned to lose something so helpful, but "many users" may not be enough to inspire a revertion, 2) there are 3rd-party alternatives, but they're poor compromises, and we'd lose years of effort in color assignments, and 3) a mention from a previous post seems to suggest it may well happen, but, if so, when? And, how reliable is that information? Nevertheless, Doug's entry is most helpful—for me at least. Thanks for your response, Pete!
