Q: I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

Gat0r, I finally got spotlight to work with PF.  But I was only able to do it once.

I used Spotlight to search for two files located in my external 1TB HD.  Both were photo files with the same two words in their file names.  Finder was able to find it everytime, but PF took several seconds to find it once, but I couldn't repeat the process when I reopened PF and tried it again.  I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I have found how to remove "Finder" from the dock in PF's Preferences pane (a little happy Finder face in the pref pane, when clicked on list several alternatives for removing or hiding Finder).

It does take a bit of getting used to.  Anytime PF can't find something, just use spotlight then select the Show All in Finder as shown below. That happened a couple times early on but now I rarely need it.  The more I've used it the better it gets.  I really like the idea of having access to both.  Some things still need Finder like Time Machine.  So I leave Finder running but have PF as the primary now.

I'm looking at it as a no lose sitaution, the best of both worlds..  I can get all the extra benefits and features of PF and still use the functionality of Finder when needed and for backing up.  Once I selected PF as the default in PF preferences it all started making sense.

    Good luck and enjoy!!

Thanks.  That helps a lot.  I really didn't know how to use Spotlight until I got your message and played around a while..  I thought that spotlight was the little window in the upper right of Finder's and Path Finder's pane with the magnifying glass to the left of it.  Now I see I can turn on Spotlight by clicking on the magnifying glass located in the upper right of my screen or using the keyboard Control+Spacebar.

I also really like the side by side windows that you set up in PF.  Makes moving or copying files a lot easier.

has anyone found a way (with pathfinder or any other app) to retain the colored labels view through the open and save functions of applications?

with mavericks it's inconsistent. for example, microsoft office products still reveal the color labels, but adobe products do not.

I'm not associated with Path Finder or its developers but Path Finder does indeed bring back the color labels that went missing in Mavericks. I posted a tweet from PF's developers a few moments ago in this thread, but Apple removed because it was seen as advertising (fair enough), so twitter is your friend on finding the code you'll need to get it. I do NOT benefit from you buying Path Finder in any way, shape or form.

I'm just a huge Apple user who recently upgraded to Mavericks and found the missing colored labels to impede my use of the Finder. I missed them and thus went hunting for a solution and found this thread where several others mentioned Path Finder as a possible solution. I already owned it and was excited to hear it held the answer. Then I saw the tweet and thought I'd share it with all of you on this thread. You can find the tweet too.

I still find it strange that we have to pay for something functional that existed before Mavericks . . .

Dear Apple, I am not a computerprogrammer, but is it so difficult to reinstall the coloured labels in Finder?

I have appreciated the suggestions to try Pathfinder, and I did try it a couple of times. For many this may be a good solution. I found Pathfinder's implementation confusing. Also, I opened some Microsoft Word documents through Pathfinder's window, and the documents came up in a strangely non-formatted style. I am sure there is a fix for that, but I don't want my life full of workarounds just to get the much-loved color back in my folder and file labels. Just sayin'

    Gat0r,

I must admit that I still did not understand your explanation of using Spotlight to perform a search, since the screen shot that you showed looked more like the Spotlight function that is accessed in the upper right portion of the Mac screen that is made available through the Maverick's Finder,  but since I'm new to Apple I put it to my ignorance and lack of understanding.  But now after having played around with Path Finder more I have finally seen the light.  The Spotlight that is that you were refering to.  I also have found the Search function that seems to work just as well to this novice's thinking.  I finally found it by doing the obvious, clicking on the little down arrow or triangle in the little search window in PF.  Unfortunately the default function for that window seems to be  "Filter by Name" (as shown in the screen shot), which doesn't seem to do much, but when you check on the other options listed under either Spotlight or Search in the pop up or drop down menu then the search function works great, shown below:  It finds files in a twinkling

    Path Finer Search Window.jpg

Now I feel more comfortable to click on "Buy Now"

Yes Peohguy, the one I posted was Spotlight in the Mac.  It still works with PF and the search function in PF is great too!!

Sorry for the confusion but at least we're both liking it now!!

Anyone finding this thread has probably discovered the new tags are extremely subtle and impede workflow if using file and folder colours as a system.

For some the new tags may be a plus, it would be great to have both tags and labels.

If you need full colour lables back in your Finder please go here and say so:

I have done it several times. Let's keep doing it from time to time. It won't do us any harm and might be heard after a while. The more we do the better.
