I've been having a few issues with Mail in Mavericks, but nothing I haven't been able to work around. Suddenly, though, the "Erase Junk Mail" option is grayed out. The Command-key shortcut does not work. I've quit and restarted mail, and no change.
MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 2.6GHz i7, 16 GB RAM, 750GB HD
Try deleting the cache associated with Mail.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.mail/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then try to erase junk mail.
Thanks for that tip. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me.
At this point, the only way to erase junk mail is to select all, then delete.
I solved my own problem: Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail. Click "Move it to the Junk mailbox". (I'd checked "Perform custom actions".)
The menu option is back in black...
