Hold down the Option key, the the Open window in new Tab changes to Window.

The Option key gives you Options.

If you unckeck the option in Finder preferences, you can reverse the behavior.

Still can't get my system to open folders (disks, etc.) in a new window. I found the preference setting, as see in the screen capture from Barney-15E (thank you very much for adding the screen capture to your response) and "new window" option doesn't work. This feature worked find under previous OS version. Please advise. Thanks!

What doesn't work? Please explain what it does.

If I right-click on a folder, then hold down Option, I can choose Open folder in New Window, and that does happen.

If you hold down command and double-click, it will open in a new Tab instead of opening the folder in the same window.

With more than a single tab,

If you hold down cmd-opt and double-click, it will open the folder in a new window.

Without other tabs, it closes the original window just like holding down Option.

I am trying to get my Macbook Pro, now with the new OS 10.9 (Maverick) to open a new window every time I click on an item, whether it be a hard disk, flash drive, folder on a hard disk, etc.

Since I upgraded the OS to 10.9, now when I try to click on an item, it opens in the same window and does not give me a new window. Having more than one window open at a time allows me to manage my files and applications. The comments about "option" key & clicking and "command" key & clicking are fine, but I would really like be able to set this feature ("open in a new window") once, and forget it. What am I missing here? Please advise... thanks!

I'm not sure you're missing anything. You just don't like what you have to do, now.

If you want to open in a new window, you must set the preferences to not open in a new tab, and you must hold down the command key when you double-click.

Now, it is entirely possible that there are hidden preferences you can set that might return the behavior you expect, but I don't know what they are.

I'm looking for the same answer! I want to work with my files using WINDOWS... I want every window to open in a different window

Why did Apple remove the ¨open each window in a new window¨? It's time wasting using tabs!

    Fully agree!

(In the context menu, there is the possibility of opening a folder in a new window, but there should also be the old option of 'open each window in a a new window'!)

After unchecking the setting, try hiding your "Side Bar" and your "Toolbar". It works perfectly for me. As long as everything is hidden, everything opens in a new window (without having to hold Cmd or anything).

    Hope that helps.

It won't work: every new window will have the sidebar and toolbar... so in fact you will have to hide those one by one ... :-(

Dude. Calm on. Assimilate. You have to make your original folder default.

This hiding of sidebars and toolbars is not going to work for me. I use them all the time. IF CMD click works there must be a way of triggering this behavior all the time.
