I wrote a SIMBL plugin that brings back the old behaviour where you can open folders in new windows on Finder.

Includes pre-compiled binary as well as source code.

    Hi Helgason,

First off, thanks for this. I'll test it Monday when I'm at work (that machine has Mavericks, this machine (I'm on now) doesn't).

I read your instructions and I'm a bit confused by one point: In your "What does this plugin do" section, you state: "

This plugin tricks Finder into thinking you're holding the command button down when you double click on an item.  If you want the original Mavericks behaviour, then hold the command button down when you open a file."

This confuses me or is blatently obvious, not sure. Are you saying that I can either let your plugin hold the Command key for me or I can hold the Command key? That is, this plugin doesn't alter or change the normal behavior? If so, that's fine.

One of the big things that I'd like is for the Finder to have TRUE Safari capabilities: that is, to be able to open a folder into a new window OR open thet folder as tabs. Does your plugin provide that capability as well or is it just for mimicing a Command-key operation for the New Window option?

    Thanks,

    Gary

Where it says "If you want the original Mavericks behaviour, then hold the command button down when you open a file." that indicates that if you hold the command key down, it will open the folder in the same window.  (The original behaviour)

Basically, if you hold Command, Finder will think you're not holding command, opening the folder in the same window.

If you're not holding Command, Finder will think you are holding command, opening the folder in a new window.

    Helgason:

Unfortunately this plug-in did not work for me. Easysimbl sees it. No change in behavior.

Did you logout and back in?

If you did not, go to  > Logout.  Then log back in and it should work.

    Thanks.

Is there another place to acquire your SIMBL Plug-in?

    There absolutely is!

However, Apple asked me several times not to post it on their forums because they claim it violates section 2.6 of the Apple Community Forums Terms of Use even though it clearly does not.  I'm sick of the Apple Community Forums now.  You can, however, find a link that other people did post at this page though, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5467614?start=480&tstart=0

Thanks.  It works like a charm.  Amazing that Apple would leave out such a useful preference in Maverick, but along with whatever prompted them to do this, I do notice that more and more of their upgrades contain flaws that an earlier Apple would probably have caught before releasing them on the public.  My OS 7.1 has already several times locked up my phone while I'm trying to delete voicemails.

This is worrysome. I know that Apple wants to maintain as much control as possible on their operating sysstem. We lost colorful sidebars, colorful icons in the menubar, and other nice features. Simbl extensions seem to have been able to bring these back. Apple would probably argue that there is no guarentee that heses fixes will work in future os versions and may interfear with somerthing they create. If they would provide a universal plug-in approach maybe they could keep everybody happy. Oh the days of the Apple II.

Helgason's approach is wonderful. However I tried to load the source code into Xcode without luck. It keeps saying the volume is read-only which it is not.

TheLostFinderNewWindow.xcodeproj loaded into Xcode 3.2.6 on Snow Leopard w/o any issues. I've not tried loading in w/Xcode 5.1, since I'm not booted into that OS.

I love, love, love TheLostFinderNewWindow. I have but one requested addition. To bring back full functionality of this feature, it would be helpful to override the "open in new window" feature when holding down the Option key and double-clicking on a window. Yes, there are times when I do not want a trail of windows cluttering my desktop.

I like to keep it simple.

I have read all of the comments, fixes, additional plug-ins, etc.  What I did to solve this annoying problem of Apple backsliding in technology and useful function, I simply took my programmable Logitech mouse and programmed one function to be a command click - and then got on with my day.

Unfortunately this doesn't solve the problem for those who use only the keyboard.
