Your System has Run out of Application memory

I upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion, and I have been getting the error message "Your System has Run out of Application memory", and I am forced to restart the computer to be able to keep working.

I have been monitoring the Activity Monitor and I have not found a process that is increasing the amount of memory used. I have seen a proliferation of processes.

I have an iMac 27-inch, Late 2012 with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 and 24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 27-inch Late 2012; 3.4 GHz i7; 24GB

I sincerely tried to explain how you can get help on these forums in your own thread darryl-1…

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5998902?answerId=25373524022#25373524022

You could be right - Apple may have messed up your system, unfortunately your other posts don't give us enough to go on, we are here to try to help but it takes two to tango.

If you really want to take it to Apple's door book a Genuis bar appointment or call Applecare, otherwise you are just telling people who mostly don't work for Apple that Apple has problems. We neither care about that or can do anything to alter it (even if it is an actual fact, which it isn't).

We can however give you the benefit of our experience (for free, on our own time) & we can give you a shot of changing how broken your Macs are.

For the final time…

Would you like to show us what is installed on one of those 4 failing Macs?

Run this & post the report to your thread…

Thank you.

Your startup disk becoming getting full, these spinning disks perform slower the more data you have on them, so consider freeing up some space if you want the best speed from it. Gory details are explained at http://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-WhyYouNeedMoreThanYouNeed.html

The tun/tap startup items are using an old method to load into the system - these need to be removed (ideally with the developers uninstall tools or instructions). They may be part of Wireshark or another network based sniffer/ router/ forwarder.

There also appears to be a foo.tap kernel extension - that will need updating or removing.

Your RAM looks surprisingly OK, the Mac has been running for 9 days, but you only have 300MB of data that has been swapped to disk - this is odd considering the dialogs.

Safari looks busy, take a look at all the internet plugins remove or update them & also update any Safari extensions.

Other users have mentioned Kapersky's AV causing issues, please ensure this is also the latest version (and it is 10.9 supported). Personally I would remove it for a few days & see if the issue doesn't reappear. Once the system is stable you can reinstall it & if things go wrong you know what to look at removing. It does run 2 different background jobs & 3 kernel extensions within the core of the OS.

You can also try a new user account to rule out all of your user login items. Just make one in 'System preferences > Users & groups'. Logout and login as that new user, if the issue reappears you know your login items are OK, but still try to update any that may be old.

I think MacFuse has been replaced by OSXFuse - http://osxfuse.github.io

mds_stores is part of Spotlight's indexing process. Spotlight will ise various 'metadata importers' to read third party file formats, so if they are not up to date they can break the indexing process. Ensure apps like Adobe Reader are updated too, since they may have older importers installed.

Everything loading at the system level needs to be up to date or removed if you don't use it.

Hopefully some colors will make it clear what is loading where.

Red items are loaded at the system level (not necessarily bad, but they have the potential to modify the OS).

Blue items are loaded at the user level.

Pink items are to get attention :^)

Cleanup:

All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.

Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" when you need to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).

Reboot for the system changes to take effect.

Startup Items: Stored in /Library/StartupItems/

Startup Items have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in there. The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.

Kernel Extensions: Stored in /Library/Extensions/

Kernel Extensions also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.

Launchd jobs: several types

LaunchAgents - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents

LaunchDaemons - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons

User LaunchAgents - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents

These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'], non-system jobs.

EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…

[loaded] - a running job

[not loaded] - jobs are not currently running, these may be harmless, but some will run 'on demand'. They may also run on a schedule.

[failed] - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.

User login items:

Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.

These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot. When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.

3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:

/Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions. You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences

Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).

Hope that isn't too daunting, the OS should be better if there are less old items running at the system level.

Post back if you want anything clarifying.

Yes, you're right I'm the first who mentioned iMovie in this thread.

No, I don't think I'll get better attention by creating my own thread, because nobody, but only Apple can help me in this situation. It's a deep core technology.

Anyway Compressed Memory is very good technology. It really works! iMovie 10.0.2 in Mac OS 10.9 is compressing 1.5 times faster the same video files than iMovie 9.0.9 under Mac OS 10.8!

There is only one problem - incorrect work of Compressed Memory technology in Mavericks. It has to be polished as soon as posible! The whole Mavericks works like living entity now. Sometimes “Your System has Run out of Application memory”, under the same conditions, appears after compressed video file (the same 15m. Full HD -> HD) reaches 774MB, sometimes after it reaches 876MB, sometimes as soon as it reaches 987MB...and so on. Only once I've got the final 1.32GB movie file, but just only once! It looks like it's a matter of luck...😟

There is only one hope - update of Mavericks from Apple. Until that, I cannot use iMovie anymore.😢

If that is true you are in the wrong place. Apple only have a few 'community support staff' (they have Apple logos in thier posts with black headers), they never post to any thread that isn't simple or short. It's claimed Apple empolyees don't read these threads, even if they do there never seems to be any posts from Apple directly and there are rules about what employees can post here.

I'm afraid you have misunderstood the RAM compression - it has nothing to do with video compression. The speedup you are seeing is because of other changes in the OS & iMovie. RAM compression uses a very different algorithm to video compression.

KARX wrote:

Apple is the only hope?

You could take your Mac to an Apple Store or call Applecare.

The store may be able to isolate the issue, there is a chance that they will reinstall the OS. This is something you can do yourself.

You could boot into Safe mode to see what happens when the third party extensions are off.

https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

You could try working inside a new user account to see if your login items or user background jobs are breaking the OS.

You can also run EtreCheck to see if you have any old items running inside the system.

Etresoft offer the same advice that I keep telling people on here…

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck_story

It looks complex but the reality is that you pick the 'system altering items', remove or update them. If you have no third party apps then it must be Apple's fault but if you don't look at what is installed you are in no position to assign to blame anyone.

It's a firehose that brings over too much if you just want some apps. Coming from a PPC Mac should at least allow the OS to filter out binaries that don't work, even if it does a bad job a lot of apps will just die & not ruin the OS like older Intel code is doing.

Yes I turned off Kasparski a few days ago to test.

After reading the link I on hard disk speed inner & outer I have a 1 terrabit to install on hand. I was going to last fall but I found over 100 gig of data that I got rid of. Mind you I had no problem and everything was fast, this is before Mavericks. Is there any trusted software that would remove, startup items and other items not used. This is all very interesting but its hard to get the time needed to work it out. But you have shed some light on things I was not aware of? Thanks Darryl

Apr 10, 2014 7:47 AM in response to REPG

I have been having the same issue, all of a sudden after 2 years of no issues. Turns out my issue was the address book synch, I have 5 email accounts all synched to the contact book. It grabbed 26 gig of memmory and locked me up. I turned off all the synch except to my mac account and it did not freeze up overnight so it appears the problem is solved. Might not be everybodys problem but I did reinstall Maverick and that did not solve the problem.

Apr 11, 2014 6:19 AM in response to KARX

I'm very happy to say that today's iMovie 10.0.3 update has actually solved all my problems!🙂

I don't have “Your System has Run out of Application memory” message anymore!

To be sure it is working, I made it twice transcoding FULL HD -> HD 15 m., and it worked without any problems! I'm impressed about the speed of transcoding! Again, I want to say that iMovie 10.0.3 in Mac OS 10.9 is compressing 1.5 times faster the same video files than iMovie 9.0.9 under Mac OS 10.8!

Now I can sign in to my YouTube account through iMovie for sharing!

The following message appears "Your password is correct, but we no longer support signing in with YouTube userename. Please enter your Google account email address (...) to sign in."

I've made the right choice to force myself to wait for an update, not to go to the shop to buy 16GB of very expensive memory, no reinstalls/removes/cleanings, no panic, no crying, do nothing, just waiting...

And here it is a "magical" update iMovie 10.0.3 that fixed it all! Thank you Apple! Thank You very much!😍

Apr 11, 2014 2:38 PM in response to KARX

Karx-

You stated Mac OS 10.9. Do you have the latest update10.9.2? and what about Aperture? what version are you running in that? Were you running the latest updates before the new iMovie 10.0.3?

Just wondering if I should jump in and the all the updates again....

Thanks for you input and congrats! I'm actually jealous but very happy for you. 😉

Hi!

Yes, I have Mac OS 10.9.2. I'm not using Aperture. I was running Mac OS 10.9.2and iMovie 10.0.2 - all the latest updates before iMovie 10.0.3.

The latest update iMovie 10.0.3 really fixed all my problems, including Your System has Run out of Application memory” message.

Everything is woking normal now!🙂 Thanks to Apple!

Apr 14, 2014 10:43 AM in response to REPG

We have the same problem at work and at home, and with all the systems that are running Mavericks. All of our systems have 64Gb RAM and are running under either 10.9.0 or 10.9.2 and all are lately getting the message up stating that they have run out of application memory, we have just seen this today on two new Mac Pro's which we had delivered last week. we thought at first that we had picked up something dodgy on the web, but it has been occurring also on systems not attached to the Internet or internal network at all. We see a working system starting with 58Gb of free RAM go to completely non-responsive and saying less than 200Mb of available RAM in under 2 minutes..

The only solution that we have found is to ditch Mavericks for 10.8.0 and since doing so we have not seen this re-occur, I think there is something wrong with Mavericks, You would normally expect Microsoft to have all the bugs, but it looks like OSX since the loss of Steve Jobs is starting to loose its quality control standards, I hope that this is just a bug, but for now we are having to slowly go through all our systems at work and downgrade them.

Apr 14, 2014 11:19 AM in response to REPG

Some people do not have this problem, some have it occasionally (me), and some have it so often the computer is almost unusable. People attribute it to various programs. My theory is that it is part of Mavericks' new memory-management method.

I have noticed that occasionally Apple precipitously cuts off the legs from under professional users. The worst one for me was Pages, After seeing an installation disk for Microsoft Office at the Genius bar, marked for office use, I've determined that Apple does not use its own software.

Apple doesn't use Macs exclusively in their data centers. Quite a lot of their servers are running Windows. If they don't use Macs in their offices, they might not notice the problem.
