Q: Your System has Run out of Application memory

I upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion, and I have been getting the error message "Your System has Run out of Application memory", and I am forced to restart the computer to be able to keep working.

I have been monitoring the Activity Monitor and I have not found a process that is increasing the amount of memory used. I have seen a proliferation of processes.

I have an iMac 27-inch, Late 2012 with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 and 24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Your "activity monitor" information is much more useful in this case than the info you supplied.  Have you tried removing EVERYTHING from your "dashboard", as I describe in my post, to see if that helps?

    Hi Harris,

Already did it. The only thing that pops-up in my Activity Monityr is the Finder Web Content. I already read some threads, did as listed, but still having some issues.

It appears that the problem is solved differently for each of us which is really stange. Since mine was solved as I described I can only suggest you contact Apple Support & see how they can help you.

    Sorry

Your report may not be relevant to this issue, however there are some items installed that could cause concern…

Google Drive has caused issues on early 10.9 releases - ensure it is up to date, or remove it (via Googles instructions) to see if the issue re-appears.

Do you know why you have 52 'redirections' set in your hosts file? They can be altering any request to an IP address or domain. Ask for help removing these if you don't know why these are there.

              [System] com.oracle.java.Java-Updater.plist 3rd-Party support link

These are all 'system level items'. Are they up to date? They have the ability to hook into the whole OS so if they are outdated or not supported on 10.9 who knows what they could do…

CleanMyMac has a reputation around here - search the forums read for yourself to see if you want it installed. I think it encourages you to do things that the OS should take care of itself. Once again uninstalling it is the safest way to see if it causing problems.

You should also check the user items listed under User Launch Agents and User Login Items. They can also modify the things that happen inside your account (update or remove them). Using another user account will indicate if the issue lies in one of these items.

I can't guarantee any of this will alter the low memory warning, however it's a good idea to be sure that all the installed apps are up to date & supported on 10.9, specifically the ones that run background jobs.

It is possible for hardware to fail, so you should probably look at Apple hardware test to see if the Mac's own tests thinks it is is OK.

    Using Apple Hardware Test

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

rember will also test RAM in ways that people claim is more thorough than AHT.

    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/

You also have a lot installed that is running at the 'system level'. I would look at the following…

    Kernel Extensions:

Startup Items: < These have been 'deprecated' by Apple since 10.4, are you sure they all work in 10.9?!

    Problem System Launch Daemons:

    Launch Daemons:

    Launch Agents:

NB: 'not loaded' means at the moment - certain jobs will load on a schedule or via another trigger, so you can't ignore 'not loaded' jobs.

Softraid is failing to run inside 2 launchd jobs, how about uninstalling stuff that isn't working?

com.wdc.driver appears to be a 'western digital disk driver'. Have you seen the insanely long threads that discusses WD software that can erase/damage/ruin external HD's through WD 'software drivers'? Now could be a good time to purge these drivers.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475611?start=465&tstart=0 (there are other threads too).

Basically any item that is running in the kernel or as system level launchd job has the ability to modify the entire OS. It can cause instability if that code was never meant to run on 10.9. Update or remove it (following any uninstall instructions).

Once the system level jobs are correctly uninstalled (or updated to the 10.9 versions) you would then need to move on to user level jobs…

You could spend time cleaning up this or you could backup the disk erase it & reinstall only the apps you use & know are 10.9 compatible (look on http://roaringapps.com for indications). It's probably easier than trying to weed out the old apps, frameworks & other installed code (especially if you have upgraded every OS & not clean installed for some time).

PS: Create your own issue if you want the best help, piggybacking onto an issue that may not be related helps no one, it also means you can't assign points to the correct answer and some folks are in it for the points

So I hope Apple is reading this thread.  I have a brand new Macbook Pro with 16GB of Ram that I got a few weeks ago.  Have downloaded almost nothing so my system is pristine.  Trying to downloas Fusion 6.0 from VMware and I keep getting my system locked up with the "your system has run out of application memory" error.

It ain't a loaded hard drive.  Mine is 500 GB with only the system on it that the laptop came with.  OS is the issue but I only seem to have this problem (so far) trying to download Fusion 6.0 from VMware.  I called aApple support and they had me download a free game from the apple store that was about the same size as the fusion download (about 500 MB) and I had no issues but I have tried the fusion download more than a dozen times and quite a few with the VMware tech support people on the line.  Dead in the water.

Apple - this is a problem.  Do you have a solution?  My email is  **********.  Please send me the solution.  This is my first mac after many decades of PC's.  I'm not impressed so far and it's only been three weeks.  Please give me the solution that I know you have been diligently working on for the many, many people that are reporting this problem!!

SPM-1, the solution is simple, Mountain Lion, NOT Mavericks! worked for all our systems, it looks like there is a VERY BIG problem with this software...

I am a home user with an Airport Extreme, an ethernet switch, three desktops, three laptops, three telephones, two network printers, a Synology NAS connected to the router, and a partridge in a pear tree. Just kidding about the tree part. The iMac and the NAS have been running 24 hours a day since I acquired them. My connection is 125Mbps with Cox. I have seen this problem occasionally, linked to Mail, and on only one occasion, the problem was linked to all running applications at the same time. In each case, force quitting the application was enough to fix it. This never happens on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 16GB) but only on the iMac (32 GB). It used to happen every week or so, but it hasn't happened at all in the last couple months.

My theory is that it has something to do with Mavericks' new memory management scheme. If so, it's going to be hard to fix and it will take a long time.

Just to give you guys a kind of baseline.

    Hello Everyone,

First post ever so please pardon any rookie mistakes. I have a Macbook Pro 15". It was solidly running Mountain Lion when the Mavericks update came along. I of course installed it not thinking twice about it just to realize two things:

A number of details are left out of the New 10.9 Update, such as the fact that Microsoft Outlook 2011 will not sync your calendars, tasks, notes, etc. with the computer as this has been deactivated.

What's quite more challenging, the error posted here started happening a couple days ago.

Now, I am a former Windows user, switched to Mac OSX about five years ago. I remember those days when Mac OSX was such a strong powerful system that it was a wonder to realize your blue screen and crash occurrences were gone.

Today, it is sadly not impressive to notice how similar the current behavior of OSX Mavericks is to those dates of Windows Vista. "Your System has run out of application memory"... At the moment, my intent is to remove OSX 10.9 and go back to 10.8 somehow. This is eerily similar to the time I had to remove Windows Vista and Install Windows XP into an HP Table computer, just so I can work with the system in a perfect manner.

Until Apple solves this and many other issues with Mavericks, I am sorry to say I will never again click the Update automatically button in my Apple System. Quality seems to be on a downward trend.

    Good luck everyone!

    RT

Why bring out something new just to have failure rates! If Steve Jobs was there heads would roll! I and a lot of other people have been with Apple since SE's and now Maverick  has a Stability problem! To deny does not fix?

I have Mavericks on my Macs, no stability problems at all.

I just got my macbook pro a couple of months ago and I've only recently started having this issue. Do you think it would be worth the trip to an apple store to see if they have a solution to this problem? Or are we going to have to wait for an update?

Until Apple solves this and many other issues with Mavericks, I am sorry to say I will never again click the Update automatically button in my Apple System. Quality seems to be on a downward trend.

    Good luck everyone!

Mavericks did not install automatically, you chose to download and install it. If you can't set it up correctly restore your backup.
