Q: Your System has Run out of Application memory

I upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion, and I have been getting the error message "Your System has Run out of Application memory", and I am forced to restart the computer to be able to keep working.

I have been monitoring the Activity Monitor and I have not found a process that is increasing the amount of memory used. I have seen a proliferation of processes.

I have an iMac 27-inch, Late 2012 with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 and 24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

I think this may fix the problem at least you should try this free app. It frees memory that Mavericks can't. So give this a try.

Try clearing some memory via Memory Clean (dl here:https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/memory-clean/id451444120?mt=12)

It has controls that you can let it clean auto or at startup.

I just set mine to auto clean and Threshold Level to 1638 mb

All that will do is slow your machine down while the 'freed' memory is replaced.

And it has great potential to destabilize your Mac.

I've Recently Been having that same problem as well. Anytime I even if I have two applications out It will start to bring that stupid pop-up saying I'm almost out of application memory. I recently just bought MacKeeper seeing that I already had performance issues with my Mac thinking that would solve the problem, but only solved other problems. I honestly think it's all the updating that Apple has been making to Mavericks is the reason being of this memory issue. C'mon Appple! Can't be worried about how long I keep simple applications open like my web browser or iTunes open until that stupid pop-up comes up and have to close everything out and restart my Mac! It's getting really annoying, especially with me being a new time Mac user!

    1. MacKeeper is crap, remove it.

    2. What have you done to troubleshoot your problem (complaining does not count as troubleshooting)

Mavericks uses as much Ram as you have, normal behaviour.

Open Activity Monitor, go to the Memory Page, if the graph is green you do not have memory problems.

Memory Cleaner is doing a fine job. As I work the memory goes down then Memory Cleaner starts and I get 2 gigs or so back. I have been using it for a week and untill Mavericks is fixed, it's a great help for anyone that can't spend day playing computer geek.

Not compatible with Mavericks memory management system. You have not freed anything, just messed it up.

All you are doing is slowing your Mac down until the Ram is reallocated.

    But it's your Mac.

So - I was having this problem - "Out of Application Memory" whenever I tried to download a large file.  I just downloded Apple's Mavericks "Stability Update".  I think they found and fixed the problem (would be nice if they had acknowledged the problem though) since after the download and install of the "Stability Upgrade" I don't get the "Out of Application Memory error" and have my brand new Mac Pro lock up.

Try the new download and see if the problem goes away...

Just out of curiosity, the actual number of that update would be what, now?

Open the app store & expand the info for each of the updates. You'll see that 10.9.3 has 'stability' in it's description.

You can also read more if you follow the links, since it doesn't mention the 'Application memory' dialog I'd have to assume it is not specifically patched and the issue may be a conflict with something else? YMMV

I think I have finally gotten my iMac mid 2010 27" back to normal. i ignored updates for quite awhile until all the planets aligned. I disconnected my WD external hard drive and added a 3T Apple Time Capsule. I upgraded the machine to the full 16g of memory allowable. I waited for the 10.9.3 update. I did all the updates including the Apeture 3.5.1 and the iMovie and 10.9.3 Mav and I have not seen the out of memory error again. Even with have Apeture and Lightroom 5 open at the same time. Not sure which thing did the trick- maybe it was all of it combined. All i know is that I am up and running better than ever now. So thank you to all who have pointed out all the above mentioned issues that needed to be remedied.1 or all did the trick.

I just started seeing this error dialog today, one day after upgrading to 10.9.3. I never saw it before. Concerning to say the least.

I just upgraded to OS X Maverick 10.9.3 (latest version) and since that a get a message saying that I just run out of application memory even when everything is closed except chrome or firefox.

I downloaded the app "Memory Clean" but the message keeps appearing.

What else can I do to fix this update problem?

    Close Chrome and test.
