Q: Your System has Run out of Application memory

I upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion, and I have been getting the error message "Your System has Run out of Application memory", and I am forced to restart the computer to be able to keep working.

I have been monitoring the Activity Monitor and I have not found a process that is increasing the amount of memory used. I have seen a proliferation of processes.

I have an iMac 27-inch, Late 2012 with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 and 24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Why don't you start your own thread rather than adding to this one. That way you will get better attention paid to it.

When multiple people start asking for help it's hard to go back and see what was suggested and what the new User's problem is. Although similar there are differences. It's like trying to listen to multiple people talking at the same time. This discussion is already 20 pages long making it even more difficult,.

Since they are 'system level' I'd also treat them like the other items, update or remove to see if they have any bearing on the issue.

Your system looks reasonably clean. Was this system migrated or was 10.9 installed onto an erased HD wih no Migration Assistant data transfered at all?

The items below are the ones that I would either update (if they need it) or remove them in an attempt to isolate the memory issue to one peice of software.

Search the names if you don't know what they are. If you don't need them, remove them.

I would also disable your login items (logout all users, log back in, hold shift as you click the login button & hold it untill the desktop becomes active). If the memory issue reappears you can assume that the login items are not part of it.

Delete the .plist for the failing Adobe job it should be in ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.adobe.arm… (use the Finders 'Go Menu > (hold alt), select Library to open the hidden folder). Then open your Adobe apps & ensure they are all current versions.

The system was migrated ... been migrated over several systems over several years.

I am happy - delighted - to delete these but I am concerned that I don't know how.  My Comp Sci degree is 30+ years old and I am a happy user of Apple but not into technicalities.  What do I need to do to delete a

    • Kernel extension
    • Startup icon
    • Launch Daemon
    • User launch agent.

I got rid of the login items through system preferences.  Do I just look for these other items and delete them?  This doesn't sound very kosher, for lack of a better description.  But mayme that's how it's done.

    Thank you for your help.

Good, but you still have not answered my question regarding the progeny of the Ram you fitted, it may have a connection to the problem.

    Who supplied the Ram?

The names are all reverse domains (e.g. com.developer-name.software-product) - in a perfect world it would be a case of finding the developers site & running their Mac uninstaller for the software product. Sometimes the download has an uninstaller, grab their latest version & see if the readme or anything else can help.

If there is no uninstaller search the developers FAQ or help forum for removal instructions. It's a pain, but the final option is to start googling "com.GenesysLogic.driver.GLLUD uninstall OS X". Eventually you may end up back on this site with some removal instructions so search here first.

ProTec6b seems to be from OnOne?

This seems to cover their removal instructions…

    http://www.ononesoftware.com/support/tag/mac-os-x-10-6/

I'd start with that since Aperture seems to be involved in your issues with memory. If you need these plugins ensure they are up to date.

I'm unsure what the GenesysLogic driver is for, I guess it may be for external storage?

Oracle should have instructions or an uninstaller for Java - that is assuming you don't use any Java apps. Check the System Preferences, sometimes the pref pane has an uninstall button.

Google's keystone agent may be part of Google Earth, Sketch, Drive, Chrome… (pretty much anything from Google). There isn't much you can do besides removing all Google software (Drive has had issues in early 10.9 releases).

    Trusteer may be worth removing…

    http://www.trusteer.com/support/uninstalling-rapport

    Brute force…

The other way to remove these item is to just delete them from the /Library

    Startup Items: /Library/StartupItems/

    Kernel Extensions: /Library/Extensions/

    LaunchAgents: /Library/LaunchAgents

    LaunchDaemons: /Library/LaunchDaemons

    User LaunchAgents: ~/Library/LaunchAgents

Deleting (or moving to a backup disk) will prevent them running, however it will leave behind all the other application frameworks etc. Deleting requires admin access & a reboot afterwards is needed to unload the extensions. Opening the app may cause the background jobs to reinstall anyway, so avoid 'brute force' if possible.

I had this problem. Then 2 weeks later my wife got it. Both of us using new macs. We realised that we both had open, whenever the problem surfaced, the same PDF file created by a government agency. I had just emailed her the file and she got the problem for the first time straight away after she opened it. We are not experts. I just flag that for us, we are convinced that in some way the presence of the PDF contributed to the issue. Of course I doubt it can be directly causal, but someone smarter than me might have a view of how it might fit into a chain of events. You might want to try seeing if you don't get the problem if you ensure Adobe not running.

I have the same problem and keep having to reboot.  Looking at my Activity Monitor, there doesn't seem to be much that is taking up memory.  Other than Firefox (where I have many tabs open), none of the other applications end up with >100MB.  So, I don't know what is taking up the memory.

The Memory Pressure starts off green and then crawls up to yellow and finally red. There are two non-applications that takes up memory space.

    (1) kernel_task, which fluctuates and which I understand from this thread is normal (so I did not touch); and

    (2) mds_stores, which is the one that slowly increases and sometimes end up using more memory than kernel_task.  It belongs to the root.  I have force-quit it before and there doesn't seem to cause a problem but Memory Pressure drops to green instanty.  I hope I have not done anything wrong, though.

Force quitting mds_store worked perfectly.  The Memory Pressure went down to green straight away and stayed there for the rest of my session.  Since then it has been clean, despite having been put on sleep mode and shut down cycles several times.  So, it looks like a permanent fix.

Now, can someone tell me if this will cause me problems going forward.  The Memory Pressure looks boringly flat all the time.

mds_store is the process used by Spotlight to index your drive.

mds – what MDS process is and why it uses CPU on the Mac

    http://osxdaily.com/2007/02/15/spotlight-wont-work-fix-a-broken-spotlight-menu-w ith-these-troubleshooting-tips/

You might need to reindex your drive. I would do this the last thing at night and let it run.

From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.

    *  Click Spotlight.

    *  Click the Privacy tab.

    *  Drag your drive to the list. Wait a couple of minutes.

    *  Remove the item you added.

    *  Spotlight will re-index the contents of the item you initially dragged to the list.

    Thanks Diane.

    Two questions:

    1. the process I killed was mds_store.  there is a separate mds process (the one refered to in the article you linked) which I left running.  Same thing?
    2. What do you mean by 'remove the item you added' in your fourth bullet point?  Wouldn't that mean I end up with nothing left on the list?
