Windows 8.1 install fails on new 2013 Retina MacBook

This is just odd. As I mentioned yesterday, I have a brand new built-to-order rMBP and all I did was go into boot camp assistant, make a USB drive with win 8.1 pro ISO, checked the box to download the drivers and let boot camp do the rest.

I formatted the boot camp partition via windows install (like you always have to do). But that's it. When windows was done installing, the apple driver install automaically started.

No issues, whatsoever.

I had thought that, maybe, the BTO machines may have had a fix before they left the factory that hasn't trickled down to the stock machines that were made earlier, but your 13" isn't stock either.

And as I said many times before, Windows 8.1 installed fine for me without any workarounds as well.

Then I deleted the partition with Bootcamp Assistant, created it again and tried to reinstall. From there on it never worked again.

Stock 2.3 GHz MBPr with 750M

The issue is not hardware or driver related, because it can work on any machine without any issues.

I'd like to record I have the same problems. Build to order rMBP 15'' 2.6Ghz 16GB 1TB cannot install windows 8.0. Made an usb drive with Win 8.0 pro ISO, also checked the box to download the drivers. Bootcamp installs windows until getting the error: Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.

Very frustrating. I would like to have an officially supported install on the EFI bootloader, so I am waiting for a fix by Apple.

I decided to try again last night and 8.1 installed without any issues at all, no work arounds or anything; just launched bootcamp assitant and clicked next.

Lucky! did you do Windows 8 then upgrade to 8.1? or just 8.1 right away?

Besides the unknown, can someone tell me the difference between EFI installation and BIOS install? what are the advantages of EFI install over BIOS?

8.1 right off the bat, created the drive from an 8.1 ISO.

Was it the stock bootcamp for Mavericks? Fresh mac install, insert blank USB drive, launch bootcamp and locate Windows 8.1 ISO, let it copy over to USB and download drivers on the same USB? thats it?

I tried this - no difference, brightness adjustment still doesn't work.

More or less, it was a migrated mac install from my previous generation 15" retina. Failed the install the first few times I tried it on the first day I got the computer, worked np last night.

I got the high-end macbook pro retina 15, and tried to install windows 8.1 with bootcamp. However, it has an error at nearly the finish of the intallation.

I would like to be notified when this will be fixed in a patch, and not some way to hack my around it.

For anyone else that just wants windows 8.1 to be installed, this has worked for me.

1. Create USB stick using Apple Bootcamp Assistant. This procedure only works with it.
2. When it Bootamp assitant reboots your machine you need to interrupt the installation.
3. When you hear the startup sound, hold option until it presents you with login options.
4. Select your Macintosh HD to boot back into OSX.
5. Run Disk Utility, select the Macintosh then choose the partitions tab.
6. The BOOTCAMP partition should be at the bottom. Select this partition by clicking on it. Ensure it is the highlighted partition then press minus to remove it.
7. Click apply on the bottom right to make the changes.
8. Now press plus to add a new partition which will likely be names Macintosh HD2
9. Select this new partition then you can define the settings on the right.
10. Rename this to BOOTCAMP.
11. Change the type to ExFAT.
12. Now click apply on the again to make the changes.
13. Reboot you Mac, press option again during the boot and this time select theWindows device with the USB logo on it. Its orange.
14. Now it will start the install process. When it gets to the list of partition you should see four of them. You want the last one. It will say it cannot install on this.
15. Make sure the fourth partition is selected then click format. When it is done the error message should be gone and you should be able to continue.
16. During install it will suggest turning on auto updates. I recommend you turn this off until the bootcamp drivers are installed. When it is finished prepping the install it will reboot.
17. Each time it reboots you will need to intervene by pressing option but from now on select the Windows device with the picture of the hard drive. It is a silver color
18. It will reboot two or three times during the install. Each time you will need pressoption during boot to reselect the Windows device on the hard drive.
19. At the end of the installation it will prompt you to install the Apple Bootcamp Drivers.

The selected answer obviously does not work! I give up until there is hopefully an update from apple soon!

This scared me quite considerably since I do a lot of software development and Perl just loves those two characters.

Find a copy of SharpKeys from http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys/. You can use it to remap the ~` key back to ~`. Run the program and press Add. Use Type Key to find it in the left panel, and select key 00_29 in the right panel. Write the change to the registry and log out and back in.

I consider this another bug in Bootcamp keyboard driver but it's been there for years and probably will never be fixed.

I have found the following to work in recovering backtick / tilde :

Control Panel ->

Language ->

"Options" (on the right) for "English (United States)" ->

Add an input method ->

"United States-International (Apple)" ->

Remove all other input methods ->

Save

Instead of removing all other input methods, you can select "United States-International (Apple)" from the language bar in the system tray.

Getting the "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration." error as well. Trying to install from Windows 8.0.
