Windows 8.1 install fails on new 2013 Retina MacBook

Will do on providing feedback (OS X -> h/s compatibility -> bootcamp). If there's direct way to file issue with AppleCare I'd do that too, just don't currently have time to be bounced around tech support.

I have left feedback regarding this issue also. I think that if we can get as many people as possible to do this we have a better chance of getting a fix sooner..

It doesn't take that long to call AppleCare in case anyone is debating on how long it might take. I've called AppleCare twice now to report software bugs (once last Friday and once today about Boot Camp). I feel like I didn't bounce around tech support at all really: I told the computerized voice 2 or 3 pieces of basic information, then I spoke to a person, then that was it. Both times I spent 8 and 14 minutes respectively. I took this long because I mainly would chat and ask the representative a lot of questions that most people probably wouldn't bother taking the time to do.

In short, I would still recommend calling AppleCare if you've bought a product in the last 90 days or you have purchased AppleCare itself. It will only take you 10 minutes or less. The more people who call and/or provide feedback online (click http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html then be sure to select "Boot Camp" under "Feedback Area") the better.

Why are there so many different Bootcamp versions?

My version is 5.1.0(473)

Could this be the reason why some install fail and other not?

There are different versions for different platforms.

I'm having the same issue but with Win7 64-Bit. Running 10.9 and all updates, then Windows 7 64-bit installs fine, but when it first boots to first desktop screen everything... mouse, usb, trackpad and keyboard lock up and thus cannot install the bootcamp drivers at all. NO usb or LAN drivers so I can't finish the installation, get updates etc. etc. I used Tuxera ntfs to copy the bootcamp zip to the C: drive hoping after reboot I could install them that way but no trackpad, usb ports or keyboard so all I can do is force poweroff and boot to mac. UGH!

The Mavericks partition runs fine, no freezes etc.

This morning I tried the Windows 8.1 install.

I had a Windows OEM full version DVD.

To install I had to create an ISO Image.

After that I used Bootcamp 5.1.0(473) to create an USB Stick with Windows and divers.

I am happy to say, that installation succeeds without any problem.

I have had the same experiences that everyone else in this thread has had with my one week old 15" Rmbp, 2.6GHZ, 16 GB ram, 512 SSD. I have tried every suggestion in this thread.

Nothing has worked for me to be able to install Windows 8.1 full version, so I went back to Windows 7 Ultimate 64, the install process went thru without a hitch, everything works and the speed that Windows runs at on this MAC is nothing short of incredible, it is faster than any PC that I have seen or used. MS Office programs like Excel and Word load in the blink of an eye.

Having used Windows 8 and 8.1 on a PC, I can honestly say I was very unimpresed with them, I think Im going to stick with Win 7, I dont think Win 8 is worth the trouble.

actually it didn't complete the installation for windows 8, for me, it stop at personalize setting for windows 8 , keyboard and mouse locked up.. no luck

Finally I got it to work!!

The first 3-4 times I got this error:

"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration." Using USB stick and bootcamp ***.

But this last time it went perfectly.

What I did differntly was this:

1. Instead of running on battery I had it pluged in

2. Instead of running on Wi-Fi I used ethernet cabel

Thanks for the info! I will try it as soon as I get home. What boxes did you check off in boot camp assistant? Windows 8 or 8.1?

Win 8.1. Ticket off both boxses in boot camp (the third is checked by default).
