Pages 5.0 and Endnote (Cite While You Write)

Hello fellow Endnote/Pages 5.0 Users!

I've just upgraded to Pages 5.0 yesterday to find that Endnote X7 is not really functioning properly with Pages.

I think its Pages 5.0 problem as concurrently I am running both Pages 4.3 and Pages 5.0 with same Endnote Library. Impirting citations (to footnotes and appropriately to Bibliography) on 4.3 works perfectly, as it should.

However, on Pages 5.0, I can import citation only in-text and not in the footnotes section (chicago style with superscripts). Further, it does not add to the Bibliography section at the last page of the document; as it did for 4.3 and Endnote.

Any takes?

This is very frustrating.

Here is what I have found:

  • EndNote 5X or below will not start in Mavericks, but EndNote 7X will.
  • Apple EndNote plug-in 1.0 does not work at all with EndNote 7X and Pages 5.0.
  • Apple EndNote plug-in 2.0 works with EndNote 7X and Pages 5.0., but not properly. It will not insert citations into footnotes or properly handle fields or the alphabetizing of a bibliography.
  • Pages 5.0 will not work at all with Bookends, from Sonny Software. This is an alternative bibliography application that worked with Pages 4.

I certainly hope this gets fixed. Thompson Reuters needs to decide if they want to make EndNote 5X work with Mavericks; Apple can't control that. But as I said, 7X seems to work OK, so this is not critical. But there are things Apple needs to do.

Apple needs at least to introduce a new plug-in that works properly with EndNote. I would like to see them work with EndNote to produce full "cite while you write" functionality for Pages, as there is for MS Word. I would hope that they would provide direction to Sonny Software so that Bookends works, too.

Apply is very popular on campuses. Pages is a far better application now. If they can get the bibliography thing worked out, they can get much heavier usage for academic writing. This will in turn pressure publishers to accept the ".Pages" file format as a standard. This could help to break the monopoly of Microsoft Office.

Yes, I have papers due soon, and all my references, I cannot use with Endnotes. I was really frustrated yesterday in the library and ended up wasting 3 hours trying different things to get Endnote to work.

This is my temporary solution!!

Under Applications folder, iWorks 09 will be there, in addition to Pages (5.0). Under that iWorks 09 folder, Pages (4.3) should be there. You can run 4.3. I understnd that once you open a document on 5.0, it won't run on 4.3. So, copy and paste the entire document from 5.0 to 4.3, and adding references should work fine.

It is a SHAME that we have to consider alternative routes. Pages 5.0 was prematurely released lol... c'mon Apple!

This temp solution is far better than getting rid of mavericks (via time machine to restore)...

This is what I fond on Thomson Reuters' support page:

Pages 5

We currently do not recommend using the EndNote plugin with Pages 5.

In addition to Mac OS 10.9, Apple also released Pages 5 (which requires 10.9), along with a new EndNote plugin.

The plugin that Apple released has many issues, including the inability to cite in footnotes, and issues with in-text numbering. We are in close contact with Apple about these issues and are hopeful that they will rectify the problems sometime in the future.

The plugin for Pages 09 does still work, so you may wish to rollback to Pages 09 if you need EndNote functionality in your Pages software. Older iWork programs may be found in \Applications\iWork.

As the Pages plugin was designed by and released by Apple, we're quite limited in what we can do to fix the problems. We definitely understand the frustration that many of you are experiencing with the plugin, and encourage you to contact Apple with your comments.

In the meantime, we will continue to monitor the situation and will be working with them closely.

So Apple should fix the problem!!

How is possible? Thomson Reuter on his support web page report the iussue. Are u sure all works properly? The iussue is this: The plugin that Apple released, the version 2, has many issues, including the inability to cite in footnotes, and issues with in-text numbering.

Are you able to use all this functions without iusses?

Thanks for your reply

Hi again,

After downloading EndNote X7 and the Apple plugin 2.0, I still could not cite properly - not to mention all of the other deficits of Pages 5, like not being able to set the language to British English, etc. So I did the following:

- saved the latest Pages 5 version of my 80-page document to an external USB

- deleted Pages 5 from my laptop

- restored an older version of my 80-page document (my growing PhD!) from TimeMachine, which, of course, did not have the work I had put into it using Pages 5.

This was great, except: BEWARE OF THE FOLLOWING MISTAKE:

I did not export the Pages 5 version to an RTF or DOC before saving it to my USB!

Therefore, I could no longer open it, as Pages 5 documents cannot be opened by any software I own (Nisus Writer, TextEdit, Word, Pages 4.3). VERY FRUSTRATING! A friend who has not yet deleted Pages 5 from his system (not an academic using EndNote with Pages) opened the document for me, exported it to DOC and RTF, and sent it back to me.

Then I copied and pasted the parts missing, and VOILA

I am now happily working with Pages 4.3 and EndNote X7.

BTW: I was unable to report a bug on Apple's bugreporter page due to a bug: I (like so many others) cannot log in there. My problem has been given a number; Apple will get back to me on this...

How Kafka'esque.
