Here is the general answer:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669

Unfortunately, your printer is not listed under the Epson list of supported printers. So when you click the embedded link in the article about what to do if your printer is not supported, you will see this:

If the printer or scanner does not appear in the list below, visit the device manufacturer's web site or contact the manufacturer to find out if software is available for Mac OS X v10.6 or later. If software for the printer is not available and the printer supports a common printer language such as PostScript or PCL, you may be able to perform basic printing functions using the Generic PostScript or PCL drivers available from the "Print Using" pop-up menu while adding a printer.

I see 10.9 Artisan 835 drivers on the Epson support site (http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?oid=156708&BV_UseBVCook ie=yes&infoType=Downloads&platform=OSF_M_X9)

I also think that the 835 uses the same driver as the Epson 830. So you should be able get the driver from Apple Automatically when you add the printer in system prefs. (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669)

By the way, Epson InkJets don;t often support PCL...so that is not a viable option.

Well, I have this printer too, and I get the following response from the System Prefs Printers and Scanners when I select to add this printer:

"The software for this printer is currently unavailable. Please contact the printer’s manufacturer for the latest software."

When you go to the Epson website for this particular printer it says:

"The latest drivers for this product are available only via Apple's Software Update."

Sooooo....? Who is lying here?

Either way. ITS NOT AVAILABLE!

PLEASE UPDATE THIS ASAP!!!

I appreciate your effort sberman, but...

Your original link to Epson only reveals if you had clicked on that driver that it says what I said in my above comment.

"The latest drivers for this product are available only via Apple's Software Update." BUT, that so far is not true, because it does not work from Apples Software Update.

Just because the 835 is "discontinued" by Epson does not mean that a printer driver is not available anymore it only means they stopped making that model.

The link to the EPSON drivers though, WORKS. Unfortunately, its for EVERY Epson printer and you have to install all 1.8GB of it, when it's nice to have only the specific driver for one's specific printer.

What I'm saying is APPLE needs to fix the Software Update problem for this specific computer.

At least my printer is working now though. Thanks!

OMT8,

Tuning in late, but if this happens again, that Software Update fails for Epson, you could try deleting

the /Library/Printer/EPSON and the/Library/Caches/Epson/ folders and then reinstalling the updates.

I could try to figure out what caused this if you could send me the folowing files:

/var/log/install.log and /Library/Updates/ProductMetadata.plist

Thanks.

All,

I just received the following from Epson support regarding whether new scanner (TWAIN?) drivers and scanner utility will be availabe for the Artisan 835 for OS X 10.9 (Mavericks). Bottom line: Epson does plan to continue supporting this Multi-Function Device. Until then, I suggest using Image Capture or another utility.

For those who use ExactScan, hit cancel when the first scanner selection dialog box pops up (it wants to use Twain drivers).. after a few seconds, a second scanner picker window pops up that uses Apple's Image Capture driver. That seems to work fine. I got this information from the ExactScan tech support.

Finally, for those who use DevonThink, the built-in scanner utility uses Image Capture, so you are all set. If you use ExactScan to import documents into DevonThink, see second paragraph above.

Here's what Epson tech support just sent:

An OS X 10.9 compatible Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility for this model is not yet available but is coming soon. Unfortunately, we do not have a date of availability at this time. Please check back with us, they will be posted as soon as they become available.

All,

Epson has finally released the updated Scaner utility and TWAIN scanner driver. I just installed it on Mavericks, and it works fine.

This whole post was never about scanner or twain drivers (at least for me and I "think" for the OP as well).

It was about the PRINTER drivers (from either Epson or Apple)

Your link above still reveals the same thing I originally posted in my first post on this thread. That the PRINTER software (from Epson's website telling you it is available from Apple). But I'm not sure if THAT is true yet because I've ditched Mavericks for other reasons and have not tried again.

Image Capture works fine for a scanner utility for this printers "scanning" function, btw.

Nov 28, 2013 11:16 AM in response to OMT8

If you or the OP's concern is for simply printing from Maverics,it works fine for the Apple-supplied drivers. I've been printing to my Artisan 835 from Mavericks without any issues. Apple's latest Epson driver (ver 2.15.1) appears to be solid.

As for scanning, now that Epson has the Twain driver (supports third party scanning utilities outside of Image Capture, for example), all functions of the Artisan work well under Mavericks.

I second OMT8.

Yes, the driver file at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1398 allowed me to finally install my printer, but does Apple have _any idea_ how long it takes to download a 1.08GB file over a 1.5mbps DSL connection?

Never mind how much of my pricey new SSD is being consumed by the resulting 1.80GB of driver files all for _one_ printer driver that should maybe occupy 200K?

Or that the primary article on OS X printer drivers (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669) -- which does indicate that the Artisan 830 is supported -- does not mention or link to the driver file that's needed to make it work?

Or what a complete violation of Apple's "it just works" gestalt it is to be confronted with the above Catch-22 and to have to search the web and then go through all of the above to make a new laptop talk to a two-year-old printer?

Yes, my printer now works, and yes, Apple's Support Communities were instrumental in getting to this point. But spending all morning (plus download time) getting a printer driver installed tastes way too much like I paid for Apple and got Microsquish.
