Ability to color folders in Finder GONE in Mavericks

Over the years, one of my greatest frustrations with various versions of Windows is they never offered a simple means of highlighting certain important folders, such as by color, so they could be quickly discovered in a longer list of folders. The same for files... I always thought Windows was so silly to not do something that had been around in Mac OS seemingly forever, the ability to give one of several colors to Folders or files so they could be quickly discovered.

But oh my, I installed Mavericks yesterday and one of the first things I noticed is all my folder highlighting, which I use chronically and have so for years, has now been replaced by an almost impossible to see, tiny colored dot way off to the right side of the file or folder, the Apple invention called TAGS. Oh my...

I, for one, have already sent Feedback to Apple asking them to reconsider. I understand the TAG concept and that's all great but don't take away my ability to sort of prioritize folders by color... About having that go away, color me bummed...

Yes, count me as another person completely disgusted by the loss of the folder labeling. This is a major, major way so many of us have maintained clarity in a coplicated file management system, and for no **** good reason, the Apple gods just decided to blow it the f*** away.

Miserable.

Hey, at least give us a choice in Preferences! Let us have this if we want it! Instead of ridiculously obscure, difficult to see DOTS.

Ah, so I am not the only disappointed customer. Just got a new mac with Mavericks installed and alas, my colored folders and icons... gone, gone, gone! Those "tags" dots are impossible to see, so they really do me no good.

I can't understand how a company who entered the market serving the graphic arts industry -- and who still has a major investment in customers who use the equipment (macs) to create visual/arts products -- would choose to eliminate this highly used visual tool...

Apple, you baffle me! I want my colored folders back... I don't want to re-color a zillion folders or replace icons every time I change systems.

Boooooo on tags! 😟 How frustrating! 😕

I completely agree that the loss of coloured bars is unnecessary and makes life difficult now. I used my Finder Colour Structure for over 7 years now, and I have 200,000 files on my Mac. The Tag idea is great, but obviously something very different. The coloured bar helps me to find the one folder or file in each subfolder that is the most important (the one I usually use every day). I used red for many different topics, so it wouldn't solve that problem. If I would use tags, however, and they are limited to 6 or 7 colours, then it doesn't help as well, if you work on more than 20 projects etc....I will mail to Apple.

It sounds like, rather than remove the entire Tags feature, what we really want is for the colored Tags Dots to be easier to see.

I left feedback suggesting that the Tag Icon (the colored dots) have their own Column (in List view) so that one could place it before the FileName if desired, and also stretch the column to make the Dots wider and thus easier to see.

That would possibly return the rapid color-identification capabilities we loved, while keeping the nicely customizable/searchable feature of Tags.

I have been using Path Finder. You can color files and folders just like the old finder, but it does more. And no, I am not in any way affiliated with them.

Works great for the most part. The only problem with it is that it's not cheap and if you are browsing for a file from within an application, like InDesign, you still get the lousy little dots of Apple's finder.

Still, it's the closest you'll probably get to what we had before.

I've sent feedback as I also miss the ability to color-code the folders and files I use all the time. A workaround that has helped me: add a tilde (~) before the filename of those files/folders I need to find quickly, and they show up at the top of the list. If there are many files/folders with leading tildes, they show up alphabetically. I'm going to look into Path Finder and Folder Magic as well. Thanks to everyone for affirming I'm not alone in missing the color-coding ability like crazy and for the good suggestions as *temporary* fixes until Apple returns the functionality. I opt for color coding to be a separate function and give us tags as well.

Late to the game to upgrade because I am always suspect of upgrades. Just installed yesterday, 4.09.14. Wow, NO! Oh No!... had no idea about the folder /file color feature going away. How hard can it be to keep an effective, efficient, solid simple feature? The dot is worthless. Unless you like tiny colored dots to the far right of your folder.

Was the Dot patented or licensed by Apple?$ You can't even move the dot before the folder. It gets "Lost in Space" to the far right. Then you need to adjust window to scrunch it closer. I look right to the color dot, look left to read file name, Look right to colored dot look left for file name, look right to colored dot look left for file name. Oh there it is.. Too many clicks, too many steps, too much time staring at my screen to decifer what color and where. Might as well put colored paper post it notes on my screen. Wait, I think I can use my mom's old Recipe 3x5 box holder for my colored post its.

I have years of folders and files that are now blank except for a tiny dot.

**Seems we can only wish that the original folder/file color feature comes back with Steve Jobs and his brilliant designs 😉
