Q: Will iTunes 10.7 run under Mavericks?

Hi,

I just can't get used to iTunes 11, and I don't yet have any IOS 7 devices which would require that I do so.

I want to downgrade to iTunes 10.7, but will it run under Mavericks? I do want to upgrade to that.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

FYI, I upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion on my 13" Macbook Air (late 2012 model). This 'upgraded' my iTunes 10.7 to iTunes 11 automatically, which I was gutted about.

I thought I would try and see if I could go back to iTunes 10.7, and three days later I can say YES, iTunes 10.7 works fine under Mavericks. (NB. I do not own an iPad or iPhone, so I have no experience of which version of iTunes they now require. I do however have an iPod Nano (7th Gen, the newest one) and this is still working perfectly with iTunes 10.7 under Mavericks.

Of course, do a time machine back up first/back up your music folder to another hard drive. I would do this before you upgrade to Mavericks.

    How I did it:

    1. Locate and save a copy of your iTunes Library.itl file. Luckily I still had one on an external harddrive, because when I upgraded to Mavericks I lost my iTunes 10.7 Library.itl file.

    2. Download App Zapper, and zap iTunes 11.

    http://www.appzapper.com

    3. Download an iTunes 10.7.dmg file.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

    4. I used Pacifist 3.0.10. (a newer version is available, just saying what I used) to open the iTunes 10.7.dmg

    http://www.charlessoft.com/pacifist_olderversions.html

(NOTE: for every option Pacifist presents you when unpacking the iTunes 10.7.dmg, select 'replace', not 'upgrade')

At first iTunes 10.7 crashed, and I thought this was gonna be a sign of things to come, but I just forced quit, turned the laptop off and back on again, reloaded 50GB of music from my external hard drive, and it has been playing ever since without a glitch!

I am so glad I read this thread--I've not updated to Mavericks yet.  Nearly did on a whim, but the forced upgrade to iTunes 11 is a deal breaker for me.  I've used it on the other machines in my house, but just don't like the interface changes 11 introduced.  Thanks for the heads up!

An alternative (and potentially less risky) approach would be to use virtual machine (VM) software (VMWare Fusion; Parallels Desktop) that supports Mavericks and OS X guests (VirtualBox's support for OS X guests on an OS X host currently is "experimental" and does not support guest additions; https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html#intro-macosxguests), and create a (Mountain) Lion VM that has iTunes 10.7.

You could configure iTunes 10.7 in the VM to access the library in iTunes 11.x located in the Mavericks installation (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US).

I cannot yet (dis)confirm that the above approach works.

    Hope this helps.

You cannot access iTunes 11 library using iTunes 10.

You cannot access a library created with a higher version of iTunes than you are currently using.

    You can access the media.

    Really? That's interesting

Could you please post a link to a relevant KB or other article? Thanks in advance!

Workaround—users who have an iTunes 10.7 backup (Time Machine; clone) could copy/restore the backed up iTunes library to the VM and not bother with the iTunes 11.x library in Mavericks.

"Tip: New versions of iTunes sometimes include enhancements to the iTunes library. When you open the new version of iTunes, iTunes upgrades your existing library to the new format"

    Workaround

Use the correct iTunes library file in /Music/iTunes/Previous libraries/ folder

Whenever you install a new version of iTunes, the iTunes library.itl file is backed up in /Music/iTunes/Previous libraries/ folder with teh date added to the name.

I found a method that works on MacRumors:

    1)  Rename iTunes.app to something else.  (iTunes11.app?)   You may have to go into the terminal and "mv" the file to do this.

    2)  Go to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks and find a file called CoreFP.framework.  Copy it somewhere and rename it CoreFP2.framework

    3)  Use Pacifist (I've been told you need to use version 3.0.10, the newest one doesn't seem to work right - http://www.charlessoft.com/pacifist_olderversions.html) to install iTunes 10.7 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US).

    4)  Replace your iTunes library if necessary with an earlier 10.7 .itl file.

    5)  Move the copied CoreFP2.framework file into /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks

    6)  Make sure none of your devices (iPod/Pad/Phone) are connected and restart your computer.

Once rebooted, go ahead and run your 10.7 iTunes.

Just installing it will overwrite the new CoreFP file, and that will hose your App Store and possibly other functions within Mavricks.  Doing this minor surgery keeps both Frameworks installed and places then in a manner that allows the App Store to work while not getting the errors in iTunes 10.7 that would prevent you from using the iTunes store.

      hi guys

i can't get used to iTunes11 as well - DON'T get me started, i find it absolutely useless, specially when ''navigating'' through almost 3TB of music....sad really !

so....good luck giving away Mavericks ! i really couldn't care less...

in the meantime i've started trying out iTunes alternatives - so far i've installed Swinsian & although IT ISN'T half as good as 10.7 fact is IT'S WAY better than iTunes11 so guys, give it a try

the interface is pretty standard iTunes 10.7 stuff & although it misses a few iTunes 10.7 features, it's not nearly half as aggravating as iTunes11 ( man, do i DESPISE that thing..) meanwhile i have been writing to it's dev & am told a few updates will come along so i might end up using it exclusively to play my music & iTunes11 ? who cares ?

if Swinsian becomes my music player, if i do upgrade to Mavericks, as far as i'm concerned 11 can lay dormant, slowly rotting away in my application's folder

i followed these exact steps and i could access itunes store and WOW that was exciting, then i tried to download app via appstore and right back to square one, "an error has occured, please try again from purchases page" FAARRRRK. just to get this right, the old CoreFP (now CoreFP2) simply sits in private frameworks? wouldn't the app store need to see this in it's original position? if so how would you combine the two as they both seem identical to the layman

ok i then revered the coreFP's so FP2 was just FP and vice versa. app store now works and itunes works mostly (tested store, podcasts, sidebar) except for genius which pops up that god awful 42408 error. if you have any idea how to merge the two CoreFP folders that would be awesome though as of now i am very happy just having coverflow and access to the appstore, thanks again brother!

Floyd7 (and a few others), when I originally did this, both were working, even after a reboot.  Since then, though iTunes 10.7 has worked fine (absolutely no errors), the App Store only allows me to install Mavericks system updates.  I don't know what changed, but did figure out that by switching the numbering of the CoreFPs, as you mentioned, you can cause the App Store to work.  Switch them, restart, update everything (my iTunes loaded once during this and gave me an error, but didn't get corrupted), then switch them back and restart again to use iTunes.

If you have stuff you need to update all the time, this may become tedious.  Since I can get Mavericks updates, I don't worry about other things.  I've updated maybe once since I posted that around Thanksgiving, and I have 1 update waiting on me (a x.x.1 update for Twitter, I think).

awesome thanks for the reply, yeah i figured it still tells you when updates are available and at such time you can switch the CoreFPs, need to have itunes fully operational! Cheers Victor, your a legend, you know i actually even called apple support about this originally and we did a screen sharing session and they couldn't figure this out.
