Q: OsX Mavericks and Time Capsule Drive not connecting

Hi,

I upgraded to Mavericks today and I am now trying to access my 2 TB Time Capsule Hard Drive. I get an error that says: There was a Problem connecting to "XXXX Time Capsule" Server. I also use the Time Capsule for my wireless network, which is working fine. When I go into the AirPort Utility and try to see the Time Capsule info it constantly asks me to put in my password and once I do nothing happens, but the password request appears again in a few minutes. Both my iPhoto and iTunes libraries are stored on my Time Capsule as well as my Time Machine Backups. It has not been able to perform backups either, since it cannot connect to the disk. I am running a MacBook Pro 2010.

Has anyone else had this problem thus far? Is there a workaround for this or an update I should do?

Thanks!!

See pages 28 and 29. Using Airport Utility (page 29), I don’t see the options the manual says are there. I have done a reset and a full reset (page 28) many times and it has always straightened out the Time Capsule.

The "restore factory settings," "restart" and other options are located in the menubar (under "Base Station") at top of your screen/desktop.  I don't see the "Manual Setup" that the manual refers to, however -- but I think if you are getting amber lights you are able to find out the status report as long as you have "monitor for problems" checked in preferences (also in the top menu.)

Seems a bit weird that we've been able to run time machine/movies/music no problems up until Mavericks then...

I'm also having this issue (mid-2011 MBA, 2011 2TB Time Capsule). I'm not sure when it started, but it probably started while using Mavericks. I'm currently on the Yosemite beta and the issue persists. Restarting the Time Capsule only temporarily fixes the problem.

I'm also having this problem where it seems Backup cannot connect to the Time Capsule hard drive, yet the Time Capsule wireless network is running fine.

I have a brand new (August 2014) iMac 27" with 512GB SSD and a brand new 2GB Time Capsule. It regularly Sleeps although restarting it doesnt fix the problem. 't some point over the last couple days, backups stopped happening and I could not reconnect to the Time Capsule with Time Machine without a hard power reset on the Time Capsule.

Brand new Apple customer, not too impressed... 1 week honeymoon is over? Perhaps I shouldn't be too quick to get rid of my Windows 7 computer...

I'll see how frequently this occurs after my first power reset of the Time Capsule before pursuing further with Apple. This is a showstopper for me.

I had exactly the same issue and I opened the Airport Utility, let it connect, then switched off the WiFi. As soon as I turned it back on, the Time Capsule started updating firmware and has been working ever since.

Apologies if this doesn't make sense.

I've been having the same issue--connected to wi-fi, but can't connect to TC and backups keep failing--but I was upgraded to Mavericks for a while before I noticed the problem. I just wound up getting everything to work again by going into the AirPort Utility, clicking on my TC, and selecting 'Edit'. I then added my AppleID to the 'Back to my Mac' section at the bottom of the Base Station tab and clicked Update. After a minute or two, the Network connection to the Base Station was re-enabled, and everything seems to be working fine now.

I'm not sure if this will help any of you with your problems, but it seems to have solved mine, at least for the moment. I'm not sure if this is some new thing that was added with a recent Mavericks update or what, but I just thought I'd pass it along in case it helps.

    Good luck!

    Jeff

A semi hacky fix I found was to go into Airport Utility select the time capsule -> disks -> untick and then retick 'file sharing' then -> update. This reinitialised the capsule in about a minute. Not great, but quicker than restarting your machine.

I have also had this same issue from time to time. I think I might have a solution. On my Mac, I have Kaspersky Antivirus software installed. Whenever I have the antivirus protection turned on when my Mac reboots, Time Capsule does not connect. So I turned off the antivirus software and voila, it worked. I also recreated the situation by turning on my antivirus and rebooting, got the problem again, turned antivirus back off and the problem was gone. So from now on, before I shut down my Mac I turn off my antivirus program. Once my Mac reboots and is connected to my Time Capsule I turn back on my antivirus protection. If you have antivirus software installed, try this solution. I hope it works!

I just updated the OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and I got an error that the back up would not work.  I finally figured out that I had to open airport utility, click edit and then update.  After entering my password I was able to connect again and the computer was able to continue backing up.

This same problem has started for me in the last week; I've been restarting the Time Capsule to resolve the issue, but it is happening every day and going up and down the stairs gets tiring. Sometimes the problem just goes away if I wait a little while and try again.

The Time Capsule is about six weeks old. About a month ago I upgraded our 2010 iMac to Yosemite. Everything is up to date, including firmware on the TC.

Another twist is that there are times when I can connect to the TC itself but I get the error message when trying to access an external drive attached to the TC.

Maybe there are workarounds (like restarting the TC), but workarounds are unacceptable for something that should "just work" out of the box, and work every time — especially something Apple is selling specifically as a dedicated backup software/hardware system.

Antivirus is not a factor in my case.

Just today, while the TC drive was mounted and I was attempting to open a disk image, the drive suddenly unmounted itself and wouldn't remount. Being ****** off, I walked away. An hour later (a few moments ago), after doing nothing at all to the computer or TC, the TC drive mounted and the disk image opened.

And before I could even hit reply, the drive has unmounted again.

This iMac is connected to the TC by ethernet cable. I have not noticed this behaviour on my wife's Macbook yet (with wifi connection), although it is rare that I use that computer.

It is 2016 and this is still happening. I'm running a Mid 2012 MacBook Air on Mavericks.

    I had the same problem:

    - macbook cannot access airport time capsule ****

    - I can access the AirPort Utility from the same Macbook Air.

Problem was solved by changing the name of the AirPort Time Capsule. I guess the change of name triggered a reboot of the ATC, which solved problem.
