Oct 24, 2013 9:39 AM in response to Yilofallby Baby Boomer (USofA),Are you trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard? Where did you get the SL DVD from? Prior to upgrading, make sure your comp is in tip top shape.
Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.
===================
Make sure the DVDs are not dirty, smudged and/or scratched.

Oct 29, 2013 12:33 PM in response to Baby Boomer (USofA)by Yilofall,I tried all of the above. First, I could not get to the disk utility, I got a rejection message and disk utility was gray.
After spending many hours of trying I was finally able to do a fresh install of OS X 5.0 and then update to 5.8, but that made no difference. I was told I could not install OS X on this machine. When all else fails call your local Apple Store. They asked many questions and checked everything, then said they would send me a new OS X 6.0 install disk. Got it today. Bingo! It worked. I was able to install SO X 6.0 and update to the latest updates and now I am almost done updating to Mavericks. Thank you for your time and wisdom.
Blessings!
