Can I trade in my new iPad mini for an iPad mini 2?

I was given an ipad Mini as a present about a month ago, it is in perfect condition, has a screen protector, back case, and apple smart cover (front) has no damage at all, barely used, basically brand new. Is it possible to do a trade in for the iPad mini 2? I was waiting for it to be released but this was a gift I was not expecting.
