Cannot scroll pdf files in trackpad after upgrading to Mavericks?

After I upgraded my Macbook pro OS to Mavericks, i can no longer scroll up/down any of my pdf files using the trackpad. I need to use the arrows to scroll the files.

Please help me what to do so that I can use again my trackpad in scrolling the pdf files.

I think there's nothing wrong with my trackpad since i can use it to scroll up/down any other files except pdf.

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

What doesn't work:

This also happens with a generic scroll mouse, so it isn't specific to trackpads and probably isn't specific to any trackpad-centric settings (such as inertia scrolling). In fact, in my own case, the Magic Trackpad works fine 100% of the time.

PDFs seem to be affected the most often, multi-page PDFs as well. Altering any settings within Preview hasn't done anything to fix it except resize the window (see below).

What works:

Using the arrow keys, actually does work (as awkward as it may be) - Scroll bar doesn't show this way, though.

Scrolling left-right, by way of holding [shift] and using a scroll wheel actually does work - Scroll bar doesn't show this way still.

Resizing the window, that is, making it shorter seems to make everything magically work normal. If it is too long it won't scroll but after shortening a little bit at a time, it suddenly starts working normal. This is a workaround at best but it does allow for normal scrolling.

This is certainly a Preview bug that I doubt any of us can fix except by telling Apple directly. http://www.apple.com/feedback

I have this problem too in Preview. I found that by reducing the height of the window to less than approximately 900px (approximately 70% of my screen height, on my 1920x1280 screen resolution), then scrolling works again. It stops working when I resize the window to be larger than that. So, that is at least a usable workaround, though it's inconvenient.

I'm using a 17" MacBook Pro, late 2007 model.

I have the same problem, it is extremely annoying. You workaround is helping, but it is not a solution.

I have the option set to have scrollbars displayed at all times, but in Preview, there are no scroll bars visible. If I change the view to single-page view, and zoom afterwards, then I get to see scrollbars. But only when the window size is small enough (like you said).

I'll post a bugreport too.

It is a bug in Preview, one of the many that I have found so far. Incredible, I have never seen a release from Apple with so many bugs, yet the Finder crashing after multiple drags of attachments in Mail to save on a network volume, that bug has been present since Lion and I see no chance for apple of ever fixing it.

In the case here, Preview defaults to viewing PDFs in "Single Page", and if you zoom-in, there will be no scroll bars, and you can't scroll even if you did not zoom-in, instead it jumps to the next page of the PDF. The solution is to change the view to the "Continuous Scroll", than you will be able to zoom-in and have the scroll bars to scroll. So that's one bug. Than you try to avoid it and go to Preferences and change PDFs to always open in "Continuous Scroll". Preview accepts that change, but stubbornly keeps opening PDFs in a "Single Page" effectively preventing you from avoiding the inconvenience. That's another bug. Boy oh boy, with the potential Apple has, one wonders how is it possible to release a major update with SOO MANY bugs. It took me exactly 5 min to investigate those bugs. What kind of morons are beta testing for Apple? Oh and while I was typing that message I found out that Spellcheck does not work in Apple's Support forum, so I had to copy/paste to TextEdit for that to happen.

Similar problem, except I noticed it's only a problem for single-page PDFs (multi-page PDFs will scroll).

As for the suggestion about changing the "scroll with inertia" setting, that setting does not exist in my Preferences>Accessibility>Mouse&Trackpad (using only a mouse).

I've also noticed overall scrolling is worse in Mavericks compared to 10.8. It just seems less smooth in all applications.

I'm experiencing the same problem with Preview, though scrolling will sometimes stop working in Firefox as well. When opening a PDF file in Preview, the app will refuse to scroll files up or down when using the two-finger gesture with a trackpad. This happens every time when using single page view or two-page view but the bug sometimes crops up even when using continuous scrolling! I've noticed that if I try viewing the file in single-page view where scrolling doesn't work and then switch to continuous scrolling, the bug will appear with continuous scrolling as well. When opening the PDF with continuous scrolling on, the file will scroll just fine, though it can be a bit choppy if the file is very large.

I've tried changing the settings of the trackpad as suggested and repairing permissions but that doesn't seem to help. Scrolling will start working again, at least for continuous scrolling, after I've closed Preview for a few minutes or so but there seems to be no logic as to what makes scrolling work again.

I'm using a 15" MacbookPro, mid 2009 model.

I don't know what Apple did wrong with Mavericks but this bug is so annoying that I hope the come up with a fix for it.

Funny, I still see the same behavior with or without this enabled. However, enabling it does at least give me a visual indicator that I won't be able to scroll (when it isn't working properly, the scrollbar disappears) so I think leaving it on would be a good idea for now.

A shame we can't do this on a per-app basis, I find the scrollbar distracting more often than not.
