Mavericks corrupts external hard drive

have the exact same issues with maverick - very frustrating

Problem description:

Has Mavericks corrupted my external hard drive and is it hopeful that I may retrieve lost volumes and data that were stored there?

My 2TB OWC Elite Pro has lost it’s partitions and data backed up within them.

Used this external hard drive for nearly 3 years with previous OSX 10.8.5, using it with Mavericks- probably a couple months.

Drive worked fine connected via firewire, now just disappeared & is not even readable on my other IMac either, anymore.

Message, “The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer.”

Can not verify or repair it with disk utility.

Using my firewire cable even disk utility doesn’t see anything, with USB it shows 4.14 GB (with no volumes visible or available)

I partitioned 3 GUID partitions with MAC Disk Utility nearly 3 years ago when I first got this external drive.

I have seen problems stated about using Mavericks and external hard drives crashing.

I guess I need data retrieval; OWC gives a 3 year warranty on their drive so that’s good, they don’t retrieve data. I can not afford data retrieval and another hard drive to back this up (if it is in fact retrievable), before my warranty expires.

Anyone have a clue or know of a fix?

had the same issue - two hard drives worked fine and the next day both went down. i went to apple and they couldn't do anything but i was recommended to get diskwarrior. worked perfect and got everything back and i've had no issues since.

I had just downloaded the Avast 30 day trial and it seemed like a decent program, but uninstalling seemed to free up a some virtual memory. Of course, Avast has left its auto-update running (com.avast.secureline.update-agent.plist) and don't seem to have support on-line for removing the from MACs.

I am desperate! This month two external disks were wiped clean; one WD and one Toshiba.

I mounted them and both were empty renamed 'Mybook' and had an 'EFI" partition.

I have been using Mavericks for over a year and this is the first time I had this problem.

Aren't there any solutions to this problem yet?

Does upgrading to Yosemite help?

And sorry but having to buy a 119 dollar data recovery software to get my files back is unacceptable.

Shouldn't apple provide its customers a way to recover their data for free?

We have not only lost data but also the money we have paid for our external drives; if we can trust them, we can't use them.

I think Western Digital updated their software long ago, although the best solution is to not use their software at all.

Then you need to figure out why.

There was never a problem with Mavericks or any other OS that caused loss of data off of drives. It was purely caused by Western Digital's software.

I have read many of that experienced the same problem as I; the disks getting renamed Mybook with an EFI partition and all the data gone.

How do I figure out what causes this problem, got any ideas?

This thread was resolved to the problems caused by Western Digital software.

You should start your own thread describing the problem in detail and what you've done to troubleshoot.

Maybe someone has an idea what else might cause it.

Tacking onto this as many others have done isn't particularly productive.

Apple do better than that. They give you a free program called Time Machine so you can backup all your system and data and not have to pay for data recovery their supplied drives. Of course if an external Hard Drive craps out then that has nothing to do with Apple.

Same Issue, New System:

After Reboot of my iMac two drives named MyBook and two drives named EFI where on my desktop. Missing was: PegasusHaven and ArtBackup. One set of MyBook and EFI had the logo on it from my Pegasus R8 and the other set from my Seagate external USB3 drive (standard Drive Icons from apple).

I shut down again everything and rebooted. After that there where only the two MyBook drives on my desktop.

Both drives still had their capacity but where "completely empty" as they where formatted.

I bought a new iMac a couple of weeks ago, and this week I installed WD Drive Utilities that I downloaded from their webpage. As I needed to reconfigure a My Passport Pro Thunderbold Raid. After that all was fine, and I do not turn off my computer often. After a couple of days, working on my Pegasus Drive all the time, I shut the iMac down, next day booting the issue appeared.

OS X 10.11, iMac 15.1

Promise Pegases R8 2 RAID - Thunderbolt - 32TB, RAID 06, 24TB capacity - Original Drive-Name: PromiseHaven

After reboot: MyBook and EFI, and 24TB as before on MyBook, but empty. All files gone.

Issue from WD Drive Utility Software after online research. I am not the only one. WD support talked to me as they never heard of it. Also saying they do not support other brand drives. (Of course not, and starting WD Drive Utility only shows you WD Drives, so you actually can not access other drives)

So does anyone know what happened and what is best to do to get back my files?

A couple of Production on it. Form which are about 7TB of Data that are more than important.

External WD Drives are not affected!
