Q: Mavericks corrupts external hard drive

My WD MyBook studio 2TB (fw800) suddenly shows up empty on my desktop after a Mavericks upfrade on my mid 2009 mbp.

Disk Drill is now scanning the WD, and the files are there, about 1,4 TB of it...

How do I get the disc structure back?

I have no Mountain Lion OS-mac to test the WD in..

I had a bootable Mountain Lion on the WD, could that be the problem?

In Disk Drill MyBook has four units; EFI(200Mb), MyBook(1,8Tb), Unallocated 128Mb and Lost partition (200Mb)

WD replaced both of my external drives. They give you no advise as to using or not using their software.

So i have used their uninstall wd software tool to remove all wd software from my imac.

Then ran etre check and there still seems to be  wd stuff in user log in items (screen shot below as etre wouldn't copy )

Do i need to remove these items and how?

Also i have reformatted new studio drive with disk utilities and am running time machine backup on it . i am playing around with it at the moment to check reliability.  i notice that if i add a file to it and then move the file to trash bin the actual bytes used shown in 'get info' don't change until the trash is emptied. Has this always been the case??

Thanks, but LexSchellings wrote regarding Mountain Lion.

The WD software had been designed for Mountain Lion.

I would remove the WD software for sure but not before uninstalling all that junkware

    you have installed also

MacKeeper foe example. Do a quick search on it in these forums. Your Mac would probably speed up performance double if you did some house cleaning. Not being critical, just a suggestion from viewing that small portion of your etrecheck report. But definately get rid of all the WD stuff you have on there.

    Cheers

    Pete

You want Amal info in the Mavericks forums? Go to the ML forums.

Assume that Apple had done that. The point is whether WD had tested their software with the beta version of Mavericks sent to the industry? (Here assume that WD had received the beta version.)

When Mavericks was released WD had not updated their software. (Why?) They simply added "10.9" to the list of "Supported Operating Systems" and continued to offer their old software which had been updated in 2012 for Mountain Lion.

Passed an Apple Store. Went in and talked to a staff briefly about the problems that we are facing. He said he some clients had mentioned this to him. He was not sure about the cause, hardware or software. He also said that since the hard disks involved were third-party devices, he would not like to comment on it.

After hearing this, I have some doubt whether Apple would actually take this seriously. Here is my OS, you have to fit in and work with it, not the other way round.

So if the cause of the problem is due to WD software being incompatible with Mavericks, instead of Mavericks taking some wired/unexpected actions causing this, Apple may not act on it and just let WD to handle this problem. This may explain why 10.9.1 does not say anything about this issue.

The problem is that there is only one Apple hard disk products (Time Capsule). Most Mac computer users would not have much choice but relying on third-party products. So Apple needs to work with the third-party manufacturers to solve this serious problem. Maybe it has done that and therefore WD has the new updates.

The question is then: do the new WD updates work?

By all accounts, the WD updates resolve the issue in that external drives are not being formatted without user confirmation.  As has been pointed out, if you need to use the WD software to set up a WD drive, do that, but then really you should have no more need of the software, so get rid of it as soon as possible. It's just not needed beyond that initial setup.

As to how this happened in the first place, that's still up for discussion.  The fsck issues pointed out in this thread may have something to do with how Mavericks and the old WD software were interacting.  To be sure, there is something in Mavericks that was/is part of the problem.  The WD software didn't change, the OS did.  Will Apple reveal what they did and take their share of the balme?  Who knows.  They certainly won't admit it to me despite repeatedly asking the question.  They've basically palmed it off saying it's an issue with WD software, end of story.  I know WD are looking into what Apple did that caused the incompatability with their software (I've been told as much by WD customer service) but will we ever find out from WD or Apple what happened and if it got fixed?  Again, who knows...

I just updated one of my machines from Mountain Lion to Mavericks 10.9.1 and so far - one day in - have had no problems with drives mounting incorrectly. If I do experience any issues, I'll be sure to contact Apple with the details.  The only way to get things like this fixed is to let the manufacturer know you're having problems...

    Your #1 and 3

The "tail doesnt wag the dog"  its the responsibility for 3rd parties to make their wares compliant to new OS / systems.   Not the inverse

    2. Apple doesnt make any hard drive products, never has.  Time Capsule contains 3rd party hardware, currently either a Hitachi or Toshiba HD.

While the OS is the changing variable in the case of an upgrade to Mavericks and corruption occurring, ....it is / was the responsibility of WD to have taken care of this long beforehand...

further still WD has publicly taken responsibility for same.

As has been widely reported, it isn't only WD. It also happens with other makes of drive.

So it's the MacOS that is causing the problem - not the drives.

Looks like I spoke too soon.  Just tried to copy some files onto an external hard drive (USB3 connection) and it's insanely slow. The console is full of 'mdworker: (Warning) Import: Bad Path:' messages.

    Oh dear.

One question. Does the update fix this? I don't want to install Mavericks until I know it won't eff up my external drive.

It NEVER was /is  the hard drives themselves    I stated that on page ONE of this thread.

hard drives are lifeless bricks, are mindless boxes of ferromagnetic platters and armature bars in aluminum boxes and sitting on controller boards.

In cases of other Mfg. of HD, its a case of WD-ware cross contamination; as many users report running etrecheck and finding WD-ware on their drives.

however this thread, alas, is being  used to report 4 diff. things,

    1. MyBook / EFI 'corruption'

    2. HD ejects

    3. Firewire sleep issues (few)

    4. endless HD indexing (ala fsck / spotlight)

Mac OS Mavericks cannot cause this problem, as stated 10 pages ago.

Mavericks cannot place "Mybook" on the partitioned HD (or 'corrupted' HD), this designation belongs to Western Digital and doesnt exist anywhere in Mavericks.

What users report ON their HD after corruption (MyBook) doesnt exist in Mac OS, Mavericks or otherwise.

Just tried to copy some files onto an external hard drive (USB3 connection) and it's insanely slow.

Put your external HD into the privacy setting.

In System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy, drag the partition into the window.

#1: "tail doesn't wag the dog". Apple appears taking this attitude.

#2: Yes, but once Apple put the hard disks (whatever make) into a product under Apple's name, then Apple has to take the responsibility of ensuring that the products are compatible.

#3: what I am saying is that since Apple has only one harddisk product, its customers would largely depend on third-party products (in fact not many major players here). Scaring customers away from using third-party products would do Apple no good. Just think about it, if you know full well that you can only safely use one single hard drive product (which has only one single disk in it and no hardware RAID) when you are about to purchase a Mac, would you have a second thought? Unlike ethernet adapters, even routers, Apple needs this kind of third-party products to keep its client base. That is why I said that Apple needs to work with the third-party manufacturers. Maybe it has been doing that for long, officially or unofficially.
