Dec 18, 2013 6:43 AM in response to e2photoby Drew Reece,If you are going to remove those startup items you should go and find out how the developer suggests removing them, otherwise you leave untold quantities of junk behind that will probably bite you in years to come. Certain apps will try to recreate the startup items when you run them. Apple told developers to stop making these during 10.4's release.
PACE for example is used for anti-piracy, it you rip that out certain software will complain & not work at all.
Your Mac is in no fit state to upgrade to 10.9, you have 4 failed Apple launchd jobs…
Do you need 5 Intego kernel extensions, 11 Intego backgound jobs?!
I'm unclear if you only want to remove WD software, or are hoping to upgrade to 10.9?
Here is where I tried to list the locations where WD installs software…
https://discussions.apple.com/message/24086835#24086835
The WD 'unistallers' also install extra software.

I stand by, and reiterate, every word. Your error was not to have known that drives made by others, and not only drives made by WD, are experiencing the same problem. But now you do know, because I have told you.

Dec 18, 2013 7:07 AM in response to Drew Reeceby e2photo,Drew,
Thanks for the note. At some point I would like to upgrade to Maverick so I am preparing for that event. One step is removal of the WD software.
With regard to the Intego. I really can answer whether I need them all. I am a pretty vanilla user of VirusBarrier X6 and I am guessing the writers of that software feel they need to be there. I know Mac's are at lower risk, but I adhere to the principle of an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure'
But what can I do about the 4 failed Apple Lauchd jobs. How do I fix them and what does each one do?
I will look at your list a bit later and go through it manually.
Can I safely remove the one in Startup Items: WDBMService: Path: /Library/StartupItems/WDBMService. Also if they are all in red, does that mean they are not active?

Dec 18, 2013 7:41 AM in response to e2photoby Lexiepex,1. As I said, delete all entries in the StartupItems: these should not be there, my earlier post.
2. In mac OSX NO software delivered by all supliers (even Lacie) with disks should be installed: issues, in WD case even data loss.
3. About your above etrecheck list:
All Intego must be uninstalled, absolutely, no excuses. It looks even worse than Norton security...
WD is uninstalled I guess, except for the uninstaller itself: really quit that from the menu.
Datarobotics often contains program faults or installs wrong, I heard: do you need it? whatfor?
Do you still use the Wacom Tablet?
I do not know about Transmit Menu, it may be suspect, If you can live without it, uninstall it.
Same for SmileBox.
Same for DéjàVu
And Netupdate.
Huey should be uninstalled, absolutely.
Java is a difficult choice: if you need it, leave it and control the webpages in Safari Preferences, otherwise uninstall it.
Checking the internet plugins with the above in mind; plus I would remove the Citrix plugin and the AdobePDFViewer plugins also.

Dec 18, 2013 7:49 AM in response to e2photoby Drew Reece,The issue I have with Intego's software is that it loads into the kernel (the core of the OS) and also adds lots of extra system level jobs too. Any one of those can conflict across the system. If it is purely needed for Antivirus/ malware protection consider ClamXAV. It has fewer system level jobs & doesn't try to do a trying else.
Either way update to the latest release if you want it on 10.9.
I can't see any color so I don't know which red items you are referring to, the launchd jobs all have their 'state' next to them. Red usually means 'look at this item'.
To fix the Apple jobs normally I'd suggest removing all the 3rd party system level software (on 10.9), to see if the OS can work without it, some jobs seem to come back to life when the system is stable.
If you don't want to remove the software all you can do is try safe mode & test user accounts to see if the issues are 'system wide' or confined to your user accounts. Then it's a question of finding logs & doing lots of searching for to see if you can resolve each one.
Personally, I'd consider doing a clean install of 10.9 to avoid bringing over all this extra software, you will need to install what you use and move your user data across.
I haven't see the WDBMService software, so I assume it loads something else. You can delete it, however that doesn't remove everything else.
LexSchellings is advising you to 'hack & slash' (delete the bits you know exist, leaving who knows what behind), personally I think it's better to remove the software correctly. You will need to find the developers instructions or search for removal instructions (on this forum is usually reliable).

Dec 18, 2013 7:56 AM in response to e2photoby Lexiepex,Just read your post o Drew:
"With regard to the Intego. I really can answer whether I need them all. I am a pretty vanilla user of VirusBarrier X6 and I am guessing the writers of that software feel they need to be there. A very false argument:
1. With antivirus you are always at least a day late.
2. These supervisors and scanners create a lot of trouble in OSX; if you want do a manual scan only, you are helping (perhaps) Windows users that receive files from you, but only use ClamXav or Sophos, and then use them manually only.

Dec 18, 2013 8:00 AM in response to Drew Reeceby Lexiepex,Drew, I always suggest to remove software by uninstalling, also here. Not hack&slash, read the threads here completely.
The rest is cleaning up the remnants or when no uninstaller is available.

Go to your HD /System/Library/StartupItems/ delete them all.
If you miss one in there, look in your HD /Library/StartupItems/
I took your earlier posts to mean what they say, the previous 2 posts above is hack & slash IMO.

This is better advice, however it is unclear if these are remnants or entire applications. PACE appears to be installed, and may be required by Apps that are used (despite it's failed state).
Apologies if I have missed your other posts Lex (I have been following along) but I don't have time to review the history since we are saying the same basic thing :^)

Dec 18, 2013 8:23 AM in response to Drew Reeceby Drew Reece,P.S. Lex,
If the StartupItems are not loaded by 10.8 you are right, I just haven't been able to see that is the case in the Apple docs, they just say they were deprecated since 10.4, but not actually unused/ not loaded?

Dec 18, 2013 8:36 AM in response to Drew Reeceby Tom in London,May I return to the topic? The problem is occurring with Seagate drives too (not only WD). Here's yet another occurrence.
Any other makes (I know there aren't many though) ?
-
Dec 18, 2013 8:32 AM in response to Drew Reeceby Lexiepex,You drove in probably without reading the whole thread, OK I forgive you, the thread is far too long already and detoriates more every day.
BTW in Etrecheck is loaded or failed, understand?, even when nothing is wrong and an agent or daemon is "failed" it means it is not loaded because not asked already by an app, or failed to load when asked.
-
Dec 18, 2013 8:37 AM in response to Tom in Londonby Lexiepex,Hi Tom,
you are absolutely right, it is not only WD.
There are two things to look at:
- In a Mac OSX there should never be installed additional software supplied with the disk, of any supplier, in any OSX.
- There are some 4TB disks that cause trouble on their own, Seagate and WD (anyway it is safer to have 2x2TB disks, than 1x4TB disk).
